i 6 year old daughter has broke into this rash. its only on her chest and there is a small splotch on her back...i have ruled out measles and i have ruled out scabies. could this be a viral infection. i am going to call her dr tomorrow, but i need peace of mind right now. the rash looks like this

small pin prick size dots that are slightly raised

redness around the dots

very little itchiness...she hasnt scratched it now for about 4 hours or so

thought i put some calamine lotion on the rash and now the redness has cleared up there are just small pin prick size dots that are still a little pink.

has anyone experienced this with their child?

  1. Sounds like she has an allergy to something ,you might say she hasn't ate anything diff. or been in touch with anything diff. but this is the age were they develop allergies to all sorts of things if doc has no clear answer , ask to set up allergy test. No need to worry get a good night sleep and if you get up later check her for fever.

  2. It won't be 5th disease unless it started with the red cheeks.  The rash for that starts on the face.  It may be a viral rash, my 10 month old just had one, it sounds like the same type of rash from your description.  His was a patch on his face, and on his body.  I took him to the doctor and he said let it run its course.

  3. Here is how my pediatrician checks for contagiousness: Close your eyes and run your hand lightly to try to feel the rash. If you can not feel it, probably not contagious. Then pull her skin where the rash is taunt (so it turns white), do the bumps turn white as well? If they disappear into the skin, not contagious.

  4. continue to give the child benedryl as directed for a few days and follow up with the pediatrician.

  5. Has she ever had chicken pox? Some kids get milder cases than others, so that could be one thing, but honestly it sounds like an allergic reaction to me. Have you changed detergents, cleaners, perfume etc lately? Has she been outside or around an animal she usually isn't? Has she eaten anything unusual for her?

Try some children's benadryl right away and see if that helps.

  6. could be fifth disease

  7. It sounds like it could possibly be viral.  Being exposed to someone with a viral infection like your neice could possibly brought this on.  Yes, they can be contagious.  Most viral rashes don't itch too much but spread very quickly.  Is she experiencing a fever as well?  Usually viral rashes occur along with a fever. It doesn't sound like an allergic reaction.  Check her thighs and legs as well.  Usually there's not much to do except letting it run its course and minimizing the touching of the area as any rash can spread quickly through touching other parts of your body etc.  Make sure she washes her hands really well if she touches the area, as well as yourself (also kills extra germs too :D).  Definitely follow up with the doctor for a more thorough diagnosis and treatment.  Good luck and hope this helps a bit.
