Parents of preteens....?

I have an 8 yr sister(yes ,sister) and a 10 yr old daughter who are complete opposites.

My child talks about school, daycare, books,playing...you know kid stuff.

My sister talks about how cute boys are, always looking in the mirror, and wants to be s**y. She asks me if she has a body that boys would like or how big her b***s will be. And when she's at home she wears t-shirts with my mothers high heels. She says she wants to get married at 18.

Is this normal talk for an 8yr old?

Why is my child so different from my sister?

Anyone have this issue with a child?

  1. How old are you? Seeing you have a baby before she was even born can show her its okay to grow up fast

  2. erm... firstly there different because all kids are different to each other.

but i dont think it is healthy for her to have such a body-image obsession so young. although, there is not a lot you could do about it anyway.

  3. Definitely not normal for a 8 yo. I'd let her mom (your mom) deal with it though - its not a discussion you should have with her. Sounds to me like she is looking for attention from men/boys - is dad involved with her at all. If not, she needs a father figure to consistently give her positive feedback - this should help her stop looking for attention from other males before she gets into trouble.

  4. that's a strange scenario...

but no, that's not normal. My daughter was more like your daughter...

  5. wait until your daughter gets older shell be thinking the same thing

  6. Hi Lucy,

I've known children like both your sister and daughter.  As the other poster pointed out, positive male role models in her life would make a difference for her.  Helping her find something that she is good at and enjoys doing may help to redirect her behavior as well.  Would she be interested in learning an instrument?  It greatly increases a child's chances of staying on the right path and succeeding in life.

  7. At 8 to already sexualize things is a product of her environment. I have to wonder who is providing her with the idea that at 8 its not only acceptable but desirable to be the next Paris hilton.
