OK. I teach 3rd graders & 6th graders. In my 6th grade class, Kids are slacking off. Not doing their homework, not participating, obviously not studying due to their grades. I do not want to file them for summer school. I think that for the 9 months they are in school they are tortured. But, I think that They should Just get an extra class of what they fail. I don't want to make my students sit in a hot classroom for 3 hours and 6 wks. Do you think that the Summer school is their lesson on not doing well & not caring..or should they just get an extra calss of what they failed??

  1. Summer school is the chance for kids who are behind to catch up. As a teacher, you should know that. If they need it YES you should have them go. "Getting an extra class of what they fail" is how summer school works... no one has to repeat everything unless they failed everything.

How do you teach 3rd AND 6th graders? And if all of your students are really tortured for 9 months you should really work on making your class a little more fun and interesting. Kids need motivation to learn... again, as a teacher, you should know that.

  2. Of course the kids are slacking off.

Nine months of school does that to them.

The answer isn't imprisoning them for even more hours of their life.  The answer is to fix the broken system that leaves them uninspired in the first place.

  3. But the question is, do you have the option of dooing that? Nooo, you don't, the principal does. So what does it matter?

  4. Yes, teach them a lesson for your sake and theirs!

  5. Is this a matter of you wanting the summer off and not having to be stuck in a class room of pre-teens that don't care what you have to say, or is this really about their best interest?

I really think that if their grades are going down in pretty much everything, they need full summer school. If its one class, they need to repeat one class, plain and simple.

  6. I think the main thing in a situation like this is the child's motivational level. All in all, it depends on the child, in my opinion. I think the best thing that can happen, though, is the teacher and parents working together to motivate the child and get him/her to realize how important education is. Without the child on board, summer school, no summer school doesn't really matter.

  7. Honestly, if they ignored their lessons all year, why would they pay attention in the summer? I am not an advocate of summer school. The sixth graders can move on to middle school, fail their class and not move on. OR they can get off their butts and study next year. Summer school won't do anything for them.

  8. if they fail then they need to do summer school. but if they have a C or better then they are ok.

  9. i think summer school would be the perfect lesson

not being with friends and hangin' out..

    ya know??

  10. I can't believe you're a teacher!!!

I'm a teaching assistant and I'm floored by your thoughts.

YES!!!  Those kids deserve to be in summer school.  This is for many, many reasons.  One, they didn't not do what they were suppose do during the school year.   If I didn't do my job, I would be fired.  Going to school is there job.

Second, getting a good solid education is so important.  If these kids don't know what they need to know, it's going to catch up with them.  They will do poorly in the next grade because they are lacking the basic skills.

If a child is failing, they should go to summer school.  Regardless of how the program is set up by the district.    Summer school will hopefully teach them to pay better attention next year.

  11. My fiance's daughter is 13 and is taking one math class which we paid for that lasts for 4 wks 2 hrs a day. Coming from a family of teachers it is not requried that teachers teach summer school they can for extra money. I believe that the child should be in summer school if it would be beneficial to them. She struggles in math and is going to be in 8th grade so the everyone was in agreement that she needed the help.
