Hello,

Last Friday my parents signed the title of my Honda over to me. When i go to the License Plate place today (cuz i'm getting new tags) do I need to give them my current license plate (b/c this particular license plate is registered w/ my parents) or are my parents the one who need to return it?

  1. Whether you need to turn the old plates in depends upon the state.  Unless you are in California (where plates stay with the car), the plates belong to your parents and usually could be transferred to a different car if they purchased one.

  2. No.  You only return your current plates if you are getting new ones, like personalized plates, or moving to another state and registering your vehicle there.  The new tags go on your current plates.

When you register your car, the car and its current plates will be yours, and no longer your folks'.

  3. You or your parents have to turn in those plates. When you register that car & sign the title in your name. You will get new plates under your name & insurance.

  4. If you need new tags, you likely have to turn in the old tags.   Since you're there anyway, it would be nice for you to do it, instead of making your parents do a seperate trip.
