Parents will not give information for FAFSA?

OK, I know what the rules are to be independent. (If you plan to tell me that living on my own and not being filed on my parents income makes me independent your wrong. Don't bother posting.) And I am dependent, as I am only 22. I was wondering though what to do now, since my parents will not give me their information (talking to them, me or anyone else, is useless. Don't suggest it.) what if I file anyway? No I'm not expecting much to come of this, but I was wondering if anyone has had any luck just being a dependent student and filing without their parents data. What will happen?

  1. Well, seeing as how they are able to compare the data (using SS#''s) to what your parents actually filed on their tax returns, and find any discrepancies, I wouldn't advise it... Do I need to mention that it would likely be considered a FEDERAL crime forging their signatures on a document that is going to the US department of Education??? Yikes.   Is there no other financial assitance wyou could possibly look into-- maybe a state employment agency that will help you out?? Can you wait just one more year--- aren't you considered independant once you are 23 (it was many years ago when I applied for the things...lol) ?   Any loopholes you can find in the small print of the application that could render you 'independant' and not cost you going to court to declare it?

  2. Have they ever given you their tax info? If so, you could try to estimate from last years FAFSA info.. Don't they check that stuff out once you file anyway? I'd try to file anyway and just see what happens. Good luck, sorry your parents aren't being helpful.

  3. There is no way to bypass that part of the application, but there is hope. You will need to call 800 433 3243. that is the number to the federal student aid. On the application it ask for your mother and father's information, but you just have to place that you do not have contact with them, and when they process the application, they will see that. I'm sorry I can't give you more information, but call them and they will be able to tell you the way to do it. Good Luck!!

  4. The on line application won't let you submit it without parents income unless you answer YES to one of the dependency questions.

I think if you answer all zeros and fail to put in parents social security numbers it will keep kicking your application back to the field with the missing information.  If you do somehow get it to go through the school will require you to verify the info (like ask for a copy of your drivers license to verify your age).

The government is not telling you CAN'T go to school.  Your parents are preventing you from getting federal loans in your name to pay for it.

You might consider attending a cheap community college (part time-pay as you go) for the next two years.  Then when you are 24 and don't need their info you can file independent and help pay for that 4 year college.

  5. Honestly I just put my mothers information and negated fathers info.  It went through and I got aid that year.
