Question:

Parents with autistic children and playdates?

My son is 9 years old (getting ready to go into 4th grade), he has high functioning autism. I was wondering for anyone who has a child with autism, how do you "plan" your playdates? Do you have set activities for the kids to do or do your just let them do whatever they want, go from one activity to the next?

With my typical daughter, I just let her and her friend do whatever they feel like playing. I am just not sure what to do about my son.

Any thoughts or opinions would be most welcome and helpful.

Thanks in advance....

  1. I am a nany to a 5 yr old boy with autism. We strongly encourage play dates which I usually allow the child to come up with activities (helps with social issues). The child I watch is also very high functioning but if i notice he is not "playing" with another child I will intervene and start an activity only to back out slowly later. Hope this Helps!
