The motion of the car can be very "lulling" to a baby.  Kind of like rocking to sleep. Often times if a baby cannot sleep, the doctors recommend "white noise", like a washing machine or dish washer and the car engine can be the same ( as long as there is soft or no music ).  My kids always fell asleep in the car and still do on long drives.  Actually, so do I.

I cannot tell you how many times I have taken one of my kids around the block when they were babies and having trouble sleeping.  It worked almost every time.

It is boring, they cant go anywhere and the movement is soothing. Just like a rocking chair.
