Pargat Singh says 15 days not adequate period for selecting a foreign coach: Hockey News
Pargat Singh, the former skipper of the Indian hockey team, is not sure for completing their task to find a foreign coach within a short span of two weeks.
It is vital to mention here that Pargat Singh is part of a five-member committee, formed to select a foreign coach for the national side within two weeks. However, the former captain has worries in completion of their task within the defined time.
On May 31, the Development and Coaching Committee of Hockey India (HI) met to review the disappointed and poor performance of Indian team in the Azlan Shah Cup held last month in Ipoh, Malaysia. It established a five-member body to find a foreign trainer
for the national side. The body is comprised of SS Grewal, Balbir Singh, Jagbir Singh, AB Subbiah and Pargat Singh.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Indian side secured the sixth position in the seven-nation invitational of the Azlan Shah Cup that further increased the need of a foreign coach.
Pargat Singh, who is also head of the Development and Coaching Committee, flayed criticism on the national federation saying the situation could have been much better if HI took his suggestions seriously. He was of the view that the body awakened a
bit late and these measures could have been taken earlier.
He stated, “Till date, my proposals tabled in December last year haven't been implemented. There is total chaos in the whole system. I still don't know whether we will get a foreign coach or an advisor. Time is too short but I will try my level best.”
Pargat Singh was of the opinion that they would have to keep in mind numerous things while filling the post of national coach, as he should be suited to their system and better understanding of ground realities.
Many of the talented names are busy with the international teams, so it will be a hard-hitting job for the committee to hire an expert for preparations of the Olympic qualifiers.
To a query about rejoining of Spanish-born Jose Brasa, Pargat Singh stated, “It is still not in our minds. Under him the team has performed well and consistently. But if situation demands we will discuss his name.” It is vital to mention here that
the contract of Jose Brasa was not renewed for another term due to controversies emerged between the then skipper, Rajpal Singh, and the trainer.
He expressed disappointment saying that it would be a tough task for the national side to get a berth in the 2012 London Games. The sport lacks coaching mechanism which is the primary reason for the team's failure.
