Question:

Paris, France ... HELP!?

Sorry, I have a lot of questions actually ... I will be traveling to Paris, France for my honeymoon in early February.

1) I have heard of Les Catacombes. I was interested in visiting this but I cannot find anywhere where they are. Are there multiple entrances?

3) Also, does anyone have any other suggestions of things to see (other than the usual stuff).

2) I am having a hard time figuring out what to do when. Everything seems so spread out, I didn't want to do a lot of back tracking when seeing sites.

4) Has anyone been to Lavinia or any other large wine store with tastings and stuff? Is it worth it?

5) Any info on anything Paris would be great!

  1. 1) I believe that they are in Ile de la Citè

    2) The Metro is a very efficient and quick way to travel through the city. Even if you have to back track, you will not feel it as much.

    3) For tennis enthusiasts there is the Roland Garros Tennisium, the Sacre-Couer, The smaller Statue of Liberty!!!

    4) N/A

    5) Pick up the book Top 10 Paris. It has great day trip examples and things to do!!!

  2. Catacombes:  My guidebook says the entrance is southeastern edge of the Montparnasse cemetery, on place Denfert Rochereau:  metro stop:  Denfert-Rochereau

  3. Congratulations on your marriage!

One of my favorite things to do in Paris is just walk around and absorb the ambiance that is uniquely Parisian.  I also love to walk through the street markets on rue Montorgueil and rue Mouffetard.  Another favorite place is the Palais Royal  because there are usually some odd metal sculptures there, and I am amused by the squared off manicures of the tree branches.  (You probably have to see it to know what I mean.)

As for musems, I loved d'Orsay, and I liked Rodin, but I found the Louvre to be completely overwhelming, and I hated the Pompidou (except for the view from the top).

I'm assuming you know that the weather will be chilly and overcast.  Even so, you'll be able to enjoy the classic Parisian pastime of sitting in sidewalk cafes to watch the world go by.  Many places either put up glass enclosures or have large space heaters so that people can sit outside.

Let's see...what else?....favorite lunch place -- Les Canons des Gobelins, just outside the Gobelins metro stop at boulevard Arago.  favorite dinner place -- Les Philosophes in the Marais or l'Alouette on rue de la Glaciere.

You didn't mention how long you're staying in Paris.  If you're staying a week, it would be worthwhile to get a Carte Orange.  You'll need two passport sized photos for each person.  Just go to any metro station to buy one.  Note that Carte Orange is only sold on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday and is valid for buses and the metro Monday through Sunday.  Also note that if you're going someone outside the city center, like Versailles, Disney, or the airport, you'll need a different ticket.

  5. Please note that the Catacombs have been closed for renovation and will not likely open again until March 2008.

Be that as it may, the entrance to the Catacombes de Paris is at 1 avenue du Colonel Henri Rol-Tanguy. The Métro or RER B stop there. The station is Denfert-Rochereau. You may also get there by bus number 38 or 68. The entrance fee is 7 €.

Paris is actually a rather compact city and the excellant public transport system makes it very easy to get around.  However, most of the really big tourist sites are in a narrow band on either side of the Seine and best accessed by just walking from one sight to the another.

Skip the Carte Orange or Paris Visite transport passes and just get a "carnet" of 10 tickets. Walk until you drop and then use one of the tickets to get back to your hotel.

A wine tasting is a wine tasting and except for the language and the actual wines involved there's not much different about a tasting in Paris France or Paris Texas. Unless you're a wine expert and can actually tell the difference between a good California wine and a good French wine it seems to me to be a waste of time. (As you can guess I am no wine expert).

"Any info on anything Paris" is a bit broad. People write whole books about Paris and, I suppose, I could too. Give me a bit more to go on and I'll be happy to answer you. Send me an e-mail if you'd like.
