  1. The 4th arrondissement (the Marais), the 5th (Latin Quarter) or the 6th (St. Germain)  are what you are looking for.

The Marais, and especially the area around the Place Bastille which has been redeveloped relatively recently with the building of the new Opera house is arguably the most trendy.

The 5th is the traditional area for the young since the middle ages (when the University was established there) and especially, these days, the area around the Place Monge.

The 6th is a bit more upscale with the Schools of both Medicine and Beaux Artes and a history of one of the more fashionable neighborhoods.

  7. Montmartre (the 18th arrondissement) is the best place to stay.  I stayed there the last time I went, and won't stay anywhere else again.  It's fantastic!  And I had a view of Sacre-Coeur every morning from my window!
