After losing at the hands of ten-man Stade Rennais at Parc des Princes, Carlo Ancelotti was left fuming to witness his side’s inability to make nothing out of their numerical advantage
Costil rewrote history following sending off
The Stade Rennais goalkeeper was branded a straight red card by referee Fredy Fautrel. Although the sending off was a debatable one considering the fact that there was no malicious intent behind the Frenchman’s slide on Jeremy Menez, Paris Saint-Germain
players and staff won’t do much complaining less than a week after http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Mamadou-Sakho-c23293 was controversially sent off against Montpellier.
A story of two halves
The first half of the game was not a pretty debatable one apart from the fact that first http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olympique-de-Marseille-c40127 fan Romain Alessandrini scored in the 13th minute before Nene levelled things up eight minutes later. However, Julien Feret was to
have the last say on the scoring side of things after a brilliant goal in the 34th minute to give his side, what would be a match-winning lead.
Turning point of the game
In the 25th minute of the game, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899 international collided with an on-rushing Benoit Costil. Referee Fredy Fautrel did not hesitate a second in brandishing a red card,
a decision that changed the whole complexion of the game.
The decision was a widely disputed one but PSG fans won’t really join in the debate after seeing one of their own in Mamadou Sakho sent off in dubious circumstances during last Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Montpellier.
Stats weighed against the Bretons heavily
Understandably, after losing numerical parity, Frederic Antonetti’s men were always going to defend constantly for a big chunk of the second half. After the final whistle, stats showed that Paris Saint-Germain had 71% possession of the ball and 23 shots
on goal which goes on to show two things. The first is that PSG indeed have players who can lay siege on the opponent’s defences for long periods without slowing down. Number 2, the team really needs to kill games off as it will be very rare to see them come
across a team down to nine men in future.
The absence of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sweden-c3015 international’s ability to create something out of nothing. However, this reliance could be costly for the capital club as one player alone cannot win titles.
Take on the Costil dismissal
At the end of the day, a referee is only flesh and bone. After all, the uproar caused by Mamadou Sakho’s dismissal against Montpellier, Monsieur Fautrel was already under a lot of pressure ahead of the game against Rennais so when Costil came down a wee
bit maliciously at Menez, the referee did not hesitate to brandish a red card.
However, the red card was a bit unfair to the goalkeeper who despite coming out at his countryman aggressively, did contact the ball. Moreover, Costil was not the last defender so does not merit a red card.
Another theory is that the red card was a deserved one as Menez was straight towards goal so the decision was a logical one. The debate will rage on for the next few days and Frederic Antonetti will have a lot to say about it but would indeed be happy to
see his side return to Breton with three points in the bag.
