Paris Saint-Germain crash out of the Europa League
Despite winning against La Liga side Athletic Bilbao 4-2 in their last game of the Europa League group stages, PSG crash out of the tournament after Red Bull Salzburg defeated Slovan Bratislava 3-2 in Slovakia.
Les Parisiens needed a good start to set the tone for a win over http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Marcelo-c23554 Bielsa’s Athletic Bilbao and things certainly went off to a wrong start at the Parc des Princes.
Within two minutes, PSG were put on the back foot after http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Nicolas-Douchez-c27810 parried away a good effort by Bilbao striker Ibai Gomez. The save certainly was meant to be a warning from the Basque country club for more of the same to come throughout the game.
A corner resulted in the first goal of the game which silenced the home team’s crowd and made the task of making it to the last 32 even more difficult than it already was. Jon Aurtenetxe stole the race ahead of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sylvain-Armand-c34429 to head the ball into the goal
beyond Douchez in just the third minute of the game.
Bilbao certainly dominated the game in the opening 15 minutes and it looked as if PSG were going to be disappointed on a European night yet again. However, midway through the first period, the mood lifted at Parc des Princes after it was found out that Slovan
Bratislava amazingly lead Red Bull Salzburg 2-0 in the other game.
Buoyed by the news, PSG surged forward in search of an equaliser. Nene proved to be the catalyst of the equaliser. The Brazilian won a freekick 25 yards out and whipped in a great ball that was initially missed by Bahebeck but http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Javier-Pastore-c18082 was on the end
of the pass and put it in the goal to make it 1-1 in the 21st minute.
With half an eye on the game in Bratislava (the Slovaks had just squandered their 2-goal lead), PSG took the game to the Spaniards. Nene was once again in the thick of things and the Brazilian found http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Mathieu-Bodmer-c24679 whose header found the back of the net in
the 41st minute to make it 2-1 to the hosts.
However, things in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Slovakia-c3007 too the turn for the worst as Salzburg had levelled 2-2.
Ten minutes into the second period, things took even a worst direction for PSG as Salzburg took a lead against Bratislava to make it 3-2. The scoreline meant that PSG were on the verge of crashing out of the competition.
Soon after, Bilbao equalised in the 55th minute thanks to a goals from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-c10409 Lopez. However, PSG surged forward despite knowing what awaited them. With 13 minutes left, PSG won a penalty when Nene’s cross hit the arm of Aurtenetxe in the 77th
minute. However, Nene’s blasted the resulting penalty kick over the bar.
However, Inigo Perez scored and own goal in the 88th minute to make it 3-2 to PSG. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Guillaume-Hoarau-c15332 came as a substitute and scored PSG’s fourth goal.
However, the 4-2 win was not enough for PSG who have crashed out of the Europa League and must now focus on winning the Championelle in order to make the season count for something.
