  1. It can be done. Easier to rent a car and drive. We drove from Frankfort to Paris in 4 hours with stops and a few wrong turns.

  2. It certainly can be done.

The trip takes 2 hours 19 minutes by train each way and traveling at off peak hours will cost about 63 euros.

You can book online here: http://www.voyages-sncf.com/dynamic/_SvH...

Its about 5 miles to the German border.

Strasbourg has an excellant public transportation system. You can check bus routes here: http://www.cts-strasbourg.fr/cts2.html

  3. We just got the TGV so it's now possible. In only 2 hours, 19 minutes, it's about half the distance that it takes to drive from Paris. Since it would take over 4 hours by car, one day would not be possible by any other means.

Doing it in one day would be very tiring and unless you're staying next door to the Gare de l'Est in Paris, not really the best way to swing it.

Why do you want to go to the German border? There isn't much there. You can transfer from the TGV to the local train to Kehl, the city right across the Rhine or you can take a bus. The no. 2 I think goes to Kehl. Funny, we're so close that our local bus goes over the border...

    You can't walk it.

But it'll be dark and cold in December and there's no market in Kehl. The Xmas market in Strg. is huge, huge, huge and it might be worthwhile to stay a day or two to see it and the city itself. Even if you left the next day, you would enjoy it more and get more out of it. Maybe even fit in the ice skating...

Book as early as you can manage it. They're expecting record tourism this year here in Alsace. Now with this train, they noticed that we're here!
