  2. Not sure how cheap is "cheap" for you. 1st thing, standing costs much less than sitting. 2nd thing, when you sit, look carefully at the "Formula" or "Menu Tourist." This is the specials of the day that are well priced. 3rd thing, you can dramatically cut costs by not having breakfast in the hotel. Instead, find a local patisserie to buy breads to take out. 4th thing, there's nothing wrong with standing at a counter to have a coffee or glass of vin rouge.

5th thing, look for opportunities to sit down, but not order an entire mean. For example, you can order a charcuterie plate, green salad and glass of wine at L'Ecluse wine bar (a small chain).  You will find L'Ecluse on the Left Bank Quai near Blvd St Michel across from Notre Dame. They are open all day. 6th thing, find a sandwich shop that you take out from. Then find a quick place to sit down for your sandwich.

We stay in apartments in Paris. Apartments, in general, are 1/2 the price of a hotel. You have to be familiar with the city because there's no one to help you, but you get a lot of space. A cross between an apartment and hotel is Citadines. This is a chain of apartment hotels. Use the link below. There is a front desk, but no concierge for booking tables, etc.

Lastly, dress for the weather including the frequent light rain. If you are from the UK you understand English Channel weather. We are from Los Angeles, so we have to remember to dress for the wet weather.  Have a good visit to Paris.

  3. There is a big flea market at the week end at " Porte de clignancourt" in the North of Paris . Metro station has got the same name.

The most important flea market is between Porte de Clignancourt and Porte de St-Ouen (North of Paris). It is called "Les Puces". However, if you are looking for antiques, they are some others places : Montreuil, châtillon, Porte dorée, Montparnasse, ..
