Pariya Junhasavasdikul secures his second Asian Tour victory in Malaysia – Golf News
Pariya Junhasavasdikul put on a world-class display at the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters, as the Thai youngster carded stunning one-under par 70 in the final round to secure a one-stroke victory in the event.
The tournament was staged at the prestigious Seri Selangor Golf Club, which is lauded as one of the toughest golf courses in Asia.
Each year, the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters attract a number of top-notch players from different parts of the world to compete for RM1.2 million (approximately US$400,000) prize fund.
This year too, the event reeled in some prominent names, including the likes of the Indian young star, Anirban Lahiri and the defending champion Thaworn Wiratchant, who became the oldest winner of the Asian Tour Order of Merit
last year.
Right from the beginning of the tournament, Junhasavasdikul remained consistent and led the field in each of the four rounds in Malaysia.
In the final round, Baek Seuk-hyun of Korea mounted a title charge and was leading the field after 15 holes. However, the Korean star failed to keep the momentum going and faltered for a double bogey and a bogey on the 16th and
the 17th hole, respectively.
Junhasavasdikul, in the meantime, took advantage of the situation and kept control over his game to remain on top of the leaderboard.
At the end of the day, he found himself finishing one stroke ahead of Lahiri and pocketed US$68,954 as prize money for his second Asian Tour victory.
“Nobody can tell you how much pressure it is to lead by one shot from the first round up till the last,” he said. “Last night, when I was in bed, I couldn’t sleep. I started thinking what would happen if I won. And then it hits
me that I’ve not won it yet. I reminded myself that I still had to play 18 holes and it took the pressure off a bit.”
“I’m still shaking right now. I can’t describe the feeling. Walking down the last three holes, there was tremendous pressure,” he added.
Meanwhile, the defending champion Wiratchant finished tied for the 46th position after carding a disappointing eight-over par tournament score.
