Park Tae Hwan acquires Men’s 200m freestyle gold: Day two - Santa Clara International Grand Prix
Park Tae Hwan of Korea acquired gold medal of the Men’s 200m freestyle on second day of the 2012 Santa Clara International Grand Prix in California on Saturday, June 2.
Santa Clara is the last stop of the seven-stage 2012 USA Swimming Grand Prix Series, providing an opportunity to world-class players to battle each other in their main events before the forthcoming 2012 London Olympic Games.
The 22-year-old Tae Hwan continued his winning streak as he added another gold to his medal tally. The Korean swimmer went full rampant in the four-lap freestyle discipline and destroyed hopes of his challengers, who were eyeing the title of the event.
With his stupendous efforts, he earned a lead of nearly two body lengths over his strongest challenger in the initial lap and posted a time of 24.51 seconds.
He was followed by Michael P Klueh of Fast Swim Team-C, who remained nearly 1.70 seconds apart and completed his initial 50 metres of the swim with the timing of 26.28 seconds.
The Korean continued his astounding efforts in the second lap, where he extended his lead to almost three body lengths over his competitor and tapped the wall with the timing of 50.99 seconds.
His gruelling effort remained 3.20 seconds faster from the 25-year-old Klueh, who completed his 100 metres of the race with the timing of 54.19 seconds.
Third lap of the event was also dominated by the Korean, who hit the wall with an effort of 1 minute and 18.81 seconds. His strongest competitor remained nearly 3.50 seconds apart and posted a time of 1 minute and 22.35 seconds the similar distance.
With his nerve-wrecking pace, Tae Hwan snared gold medal of the event by submitting a time of 1 minute and 46.88 seconds.
The gold medallist remained almost three seconds faster from Klueh, who finished second in the event with the timing of 1 minute and 49.53 seconds.
Third position of the discipline was secured by David J Nolan of Unattached-PC, who posted 1 minute and 51.63 seconds.
Furthermore, the position holder collected their medals and accolades at the prize ceremony of the championship.
