Park Tae Hwan earns Men’s 100m freestyle gold: Day one - Santa Clara International Grand Prix
Park Tae Hwan of Korea earned gold medal of the Men’s 100m freestyle on initial day of the 2012 Santa Clara International Grand Prix in California on Friday, June 1.
Santa Clara is the concluding stop of 2012 USA Swimming Grand Prix Series, which provides a chance to the world-class players to compete with each other in their respective disciplines and improve their swims before the 2012 London Games.
The 22-year-old Tae Hwan stayed comfortably ahead of his opponents throughout the double lap discipline and captured gold medal of the event with the timing of 48.85 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Anthony L Ervin of California Aquatics, who stayed 1.10 seconds apart wand secured silver medal of the discipline with the timing of 49.95 seconds.
The second position holder was trailed by Aaron M Wayne of Una Tera-PC, who stayed 0.09 seconds apart and settled on the finishing end as third position holder with the timing of 50.04 seconds.
Wayne was chased by Federico Grabich of Argentina, who was nearly half body length behind and cruised his way towards the finishing wall for fourth position with the timing of 50.52 seconds.
Fifth position of the discipline was obtained by William F Copeland of California Aquatics, who was only 0.02 seconds slower from his foregoing finisher and touched the finishing blockade with the timing of 50.54 seconds.
The 26-year-old Copeland was chased by Geoffrey Cheah of Hong Kong, who was 0.42 seconds apart and proved his mettle for sixth position of the discipline by producing a time of 50.96 seconds.
Cheah was traced by Thomas A Shields of California Aquatics, who was 0.11 seconds slower from his preceding swimmer and finished seventh in the 100m event. Subsequently, Shields emerged on the finishing wall for seventh finest spot of the race with an effort of 51.07 seconds.
In addition, the session came to an end after the conclusion of all planned events in Men and Women’s corner while the winners received a huge round of applause from the audience for their gruelling efforts at the medal ceremony of the tournament.
