Park Tae Hwan occupies Men’s 200m freestyle gold: Day two – 2012 NSW State Open Championships
Olympic champion, Park Tae Hwan continued his thrilling form and occupied gold medal of the Men’s 200m freestyle on day two of the 2012 New South Wales (NSW) State Open Championships at the Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre on Saturday, February 11.
The 22-year-old Tae Hwan, who captured gold medal of the 400m freestyle on initial day of the championship, overwhelmed his rivals in the 200m discipline. Tae Hwan is the gold medallist of 400m freestyle at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games while accomplished
the title of same discipline at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships.
South Korea’s Tae Hwan outsmarted all struggles of his fellow swimmers in the first lap. With his nerve-wrecking performance in the initial lap, he shattered hopes of his competitors, who were eyeing the title of 200m event.
He completed his first lap of the race in a time of 25.52 seconds. He was followed by Nicholas Ffrost, who completed his initial lap with a timing of 25.81 seconds.
Tae Hwan continued his scintillating form in the second lap, where he maintained his pace and ended his first round by clocking a time of 53.05 seconds. The 25-year-old Ffrost stayed 0.36 seconds slower and concluded his first round of the race with an effort
of 53.41 seconds.
The battle continued in third lap, where Tae Hwan showed no signs of slowing down and remained prominent for top spot by posting a time of 1 minute and 20.40 seconds. He stayed 0.46 seconds ahead of Ffrost, who wrapped up the equivalent distance by submitting
1 minute and 20.86 seconds.
With his elevated efforts, the South Korean went full throttle in the final lap and extended his lead to almost two seconds by reporting 1 minute and 46.78 seconds for gold medal. He was chased by Ffrost, who secured silver medal of the event in a time of
1 minute and 48.73 seconds.
Ffrost was trailed by 21-year-old Jarrod Killey, who reached the victory stand for bronze medal by producing an effort of 1 minute and 48.93 seconds.
In addition, the session ended after the completion of all scheduled events while the championship will continue for one more day to complete all swimming events.
