Park Tae-Kyung, Kim Deok-Hyun and Choi Yun-Hee to lead Korea at IAAF World Athletics Championships
With the Daegu athletics event just around the corner, Korean Athletics authorities have announced the contingent that will be lead by Park Tae-Kyung, the sprint hurdler, Kim Deok-Hyun, the triple jumper, and Choi Yun-Hee, the woman pole vaulter the 13th
edition of the World Athletics Championships.
While announcing the team for the mega athletics event, Moon Bong-gi, the head coach said that the team was a combination of young and experienced athletes. The Korea Association of Athletics Federation made sure that the team was well balanced for the formidable
challenge ahead, to be hosted in Daegu, about 300 km away from Seoul.
One of the leaders of the team for the World Championships, Park Tae-Kyung, has been the Asian Games medallist for marking a finish of 13.48 seconds in the 110m hurdle. The experienced athlete, who has been given the privilege to lead the national team,
is all set to utilise the opportunity in making an impact on the event that is being organised in their hometown.
For securing a title, Park will contest against some of the top guns of the hurdling world. For instance, he will grapple for a title against Dayron Robles, David Oliver and Liu Xiang.
In the triple jump competition, it will be 26-year-old Kim, who will be representing the home side after a hiatus of about two months marred by a calf injury. The formidable athlete, in order to bag the 2010 Asian Games’ gold medal, had marked a landing
of 8.11m. Amid the splendid performances he cherishes, he had also dominated the Daegu Pre-Championships held in May.
Finally, the third prominent athlete representing the hosting nation at the event is Choi, the national pole vault champion. Choi set a new Korean record for crossing the bar as high as 4.40m, about two months ago. Lining-up in the field for the big title
this year, the athlete is also hopeful of landing among the world’s top-ten list in the pole vault discipline.
Another gem in the Korean squad is youngster, Kim g**k, the 19-year-old sprinter who broke Korea’s 31-year-old record in the 100m meet, for clocking a finish of 10.23 seconds. Joining her will be the Women’s long jump title holder, Jung Soon-ok and Chung
Hae-rim, the Women’s 100m hurdle specialist.
Quite satisfied with the final squad, Moon Bong-gi, the head coach said, “The squad is well mixed with young potential talent and well-experienced veteran athletes.”
However, the real strength of this squad will only become visible once it competes against the best fields of the world that have been put together for the cut-throat competition in the respective disciplines.
