How far do you have to be away from the sidewalk curb when your park your car in a residential suburban area?

(I'm willing to bet you that each answer people submit in yahoo-answers will vary by a factor of 7 in. about 40% of the answers will be different from each other, thats my prediction. just goes to show you how much people know about driving. There are these little insignificant unimportant unnecessary rules that no one knows.)

My driving instructor told me the strangest thing. Guess how far away you have to be to park in a suburban neighborhood.

  1. Every place that I have gone to the rule has been no more than 12 inches from the curb....

  2. This measurement does vary from state to state and province to province.

In some areas the maximum distance you can park from a curb is 18 inches or 50 cm.

In other areas the maximum distance you can park from a curb is 12 inches or 30 cm.

So you see, laws do vary from place to place.

Now, do share what  your Instructor told you..........?

  3. In Ontario, Canada it is 30 cm...that's roughly 1 foot.  It means that you are still on the black part of the road right next to the gutter which is usually cement!

  4. its 18 inches isnt it?

  5. In California, you must park within 18 inches of the curb.

    The California Vehicle Code:

    http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/waisga...

    says:

22502.  (a) Except as otherwise provided in this chapter every vehicle stopped or parked upon a roadway where there are adjacent curbs shall be stopped or parked with the right-hand wheels of such vehicle parallel with and within 18 inches of the right-hand curb, except that motorcycles shall be parked with at least one wheel or fender touching the right-hand curb.
