Question:

Parking question?

I have trouble parking my car between two other vehicles. I can get into the space fine, but I can't seem to determine how close I am to the vehicle behind me. How can I possibly judge distance seated behind the wheel? Can anyone offer some advice here? Thank you

  1. in the trucking industry it is called G O A L

get out and look anytime you are unsure of distance or obstacle

  2. do what I do, stop, open the door have a look, or buy one of those parking mirrors that go in your back window, it shows how close you are,

  3. Practice - let me help you.

Go to a quiet area, like an industrial area at weekends, with a friend. Take a couple of old chairs with you (to represent the car behind you) and try a series of reverses. Get your friend to shout out the distances between your and the chairs as you reverse and note the view in your mirrors for each distance.

Get used to reversing just using the wing mirrors - their view is more accurate and it is safer than you twisting round from the steering wheel. (Lorry and bus drivers have to use their wing mirrors, because turning round does them no good!)

Good parking technique is a skill and skills have to be learnt!

  4. If driving a car you can use the top of your trunk or the front of your hood to help you.

When the trunk or the hood is at the same height of the other vehicle you are close enough.

Try it and see if it will help you and good luck.

  5. It just takes time and practice.

    Parallel parking is very difficult.

Have an experienced driver help you.
