Parkinson, Burrow and Smith secure Round 3 spot at Volcom Fiji Pro – Surfing news
Australia’s Joel Parkinson, his compatriot Taj Burrow and South Africa’s Jordy Smith emerged triumphant in their respective Round 2 heats at the Volcom Fiji Pro that continue at the alternate venue of Restaurants in Tavarua, Fiji, on Thursday, June 6, 2013.
The three surfers consequently extended their life in the event by securing their place in the third round, while the surfers they downed in their respective heats were eliminated from the competition.
With four-to-six foot barrels on offer at the secondary event site on the latest day of the competition, the stage was set for the world’s best surfers to put on exquisite performances to ensure their survival in the competition and entertain the huge crowd
in attendance.
Parkinson, reigning ASP World Champion, was a no-show during his Round 1 heat, which resulted in him locking horns with Hawaii’s Dusty Payne for the Round 3 spot on offer.
The conditions on offer seemed to suit the Australian’s style of surfing perfectly and he made no mistake in making the most out of them.
Locking a juicy barrel in the opening minutes of the heat, Parkinson managed to post a near-perfect 9.37 on the score-board. Adding another 9.10 points to his account, the Australian surfer moved to a heat-total of 18.47 points.
Payne got off to a solid start himself, earning an 8.63 off his first business-wave, but it left him with a demanding task of searching for a near-perfect score off his second business-wave. The Hawaiian surfer only managed to add an additional 6.90 points
to his account, thus finishing with a heat-total of 15.53 points.
The fifth heat saw Burrow make amends for his dismal Round 1 performance.
The Australian was pitted against his compatriot Adam Melling, with the threat of elimination hanging over their heads.
Both the surfers struggled to get their hands on a couple of good scores during the course of the heat.
Eventually, a heat-total of 7.87 points that comprised of a 4.17 and 3.70-point ride turned out to be sufficient to earn Burrow the win over Melling, who did not finish too far behind with a two-wave total of 7.76 points.
Smith had failed to make much of an impact during his Round 1 heat, but he successfully bounced back with an impressive performance in the sixth heat of Round 2, which had him going against Ireland’s Glenn Hall.
The South African surfer opened his account with an 8.00-point ride and went on to score a 5.50 off his second business-wave, thus finishing with a heat-total of 13.50 points.
Hall failed to come up with an adequate response. Scoring a 4.63 and 3.80 off his top-two waves, the Irish surfer eventually registered a heat-total of 8.43 points, which failed to save him from getting eliminated from the competition.
