Parrot Chiclid HELP???

Question

I have a Parrot Chiclid(not sure on the spelling)that in the last few days has grown a patch of growths under it's lips between the gills and on the outside of the gills. It is white stringy lumps...never seen anything like this before. It doesn't look anything similar to a parasite either. I have had this fish for about 6-7 yrs. Could it be a parasite or maybe it's just getting old? The tank is also due for a water change, should I wait or do it right away??? PLEASE HELP!!!!

Due for a water change kind of gives a clue.  It sounds like some type of fungus, probably caused largely by dirty water.
