  1. theyre expensive here becuse theyre very rare here. but in south america they are very common and are very great birds. i have two parakeets theyre really fun once you get to train them

  2. Your Answer:

They have to get quarantined for a few days or weeks depending on the breed, country of origin and many cannot handle the plane rideso the price covers all that If you know someone who is coming to the States and you get the permits and vet paperwork maybe you can save a few bucks, it is not easy, I picked up my African Congolese in Florida for $750, in New York they go for a minimum of $1200. The airline told me they only allow one live pet in the cabin so I brought him in a small box, on my lap and paid a $25 fare.

Maybe you can check prices in states where they sell more and can afford a lower margin of profit.

  3. they are imported and they are always more at a pet store as well . May I suggest you find a breeder and then you could probably get the bird for like 1200.00 or so . and in columbia the birds are not rare that is why you would only pay 100.00 for it there . good luck also there are other things like bird fairs where you can talk to the breeders and get one of their babys for like 1200.00 or so . good luck .

  4. pet stores charge outrageous prices.

from a BREEDER in the us your looking at aprox 700-1500 for a scarlet depending on how its been raised.

there more expensive here because they are captive bred and alot goes into them...

in countries where their native they will be cheaper because there often stolen from wild nests!

  5. bout 100 buks

  6. That is outrageous, but you have to understand that most birds are native in other countries, versus the U.S.  You can get Amazons for next to nothing and over here they are expensive. Lorikeets fly around in Australia freely, whereas I paid $600 for mine here in the U.S. They will never sale that bird for $7000.00, you can almost get a Hyancith for that price. The ones I have seen in pet stores are between $2,000-$3,000. The ones on birdbreeders.com are $1,200-$1,700.

  7. Well South America has jungles full of parrots and poaching is prevalent.

$7000 is a lot of money even for a scarlet in a pet shop.Pet shops have to make a large profit on animals due to overhead.

  8. That would be a typical price in Australia for a Blue & Gold Macaw.. Scarlet Macaws are more like $12,000 in Australia... Its all down to supply and demand.. Australia has tuff quarantine laws which means very few if any birds are imported to australia meaning all the bird stock needs to be bred locally and in the 80's macaws become very rare in Australia.. As it stands now we still have a very limited range of hyacinth macaws, perhaps less than 30 Australia wide....If you go to http://www.BirdsForSaleOnline.com.au you can see the variety of prices in Australia.

  9. have you tought about an adoption there is probably an adoption center around you. Parrot rescue or something like that :)

  10. First, wild caught birds are no longer imported into the US - that practice ended in October of 1993.

The big birds are expensive to raise - it can take years from the time the prospective parents initially meet each other to the time they produce live offspring. During those years, some breeder is spending a lot of money making sure those birds have food and all the necessities to make them comfortable enough to breed. Then when the babies finally do come, months of handfeeding, sometimes round the clock, to assure someone a tame pet. I'm sure you would agree all that work is worth more than $100.  I am sure your cousin can explain that to you.

Of course you can find a Scarlet Macaw in Colombia for $100.  How much is a $100 worth in Colombia?  The average person in Colombia makes $2500 a year.  You can find a Galah in Australia for around $10.  In the US, they cost about $2500... Australia sees them as a pest species... but they won't export them either.
