Part 1: Athletic Club vs. Racing Santander – Spanish La Liga Review
The Los Leones held on for victory as they went up to the sixth spot on the Spanish La Liga table. Joaquin Caparro’s Athletic Club are doing a fine job in the Primera Division this season and are being a threat to all the mid-table sides as they have managed
to climb up to the sixth spot after winning against Racing Santander. Thanks to goals from Javier Martinez and Iker Muniain, Bilbao won the game 2-1 at home to take all three points from this week’s Spanish La Liga fixture.
With the game starting off in San Mames, the home team managed to take advantage of the home ground and home crowd. Athletic Club were dominating for the first ten minutes and got a quick lead of two goals to pressurize the visiting side. The lead was definitely
deserved as it was all one-way-traffic in San Mames for most of the game.
Athletic Club won a free kick on the left flank and the midfielder David Lopez decided to take it. The set piece was taken inch-perfect as Lopez curled it in towards the 18-yard box. Javi http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Martinez-c24468 made sure he gets a head to it and he did as the ball flew
past Tono and gave http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Athletic-Club-c38535 a 1-0 lead after just seven minutes gone.
Soon, Athletic Club managed to double their lead with the help of their 17-year-old striker Iker Muniain. It was http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gaizka-Toquero-c14388 who dribbled past four Racing players and finally got a lot of space to look for his man inside the 18-yard box. Toquero decided
to make a cut-back pass towards the 17-year-old and after delivering the ball perfectly, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Iker-Muniain-c16816 made no mistake in smashing the ball at the back of the net. It was a beautiful finish by the youngster as he managed to impress San Mames all over again.
The Los Verdiblancos tried their best to get back into the game and they did get an opportunity just before the half hour mark. It was Kennedy Bakircioglu who managed to find ample space outside the 18-yard box and tried his luck on goal. Even though his
shot couldn’t be stopped by the goalkeeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gorka-Iraizoz-c15189, it struck the woodwork and denied Racing the goal that they were craving for.
Just before the half-time whistle, Athletic almost tripled their lead against Racing. The goal was to come from another free kick as David Lopez stood over it to take the shot. However, the well-struck free kick only managed to find the left hand post of
Tono and the home team were denied another goal scoring opportunity. With the second half starting, the teams came on to the pitch freshened up.
