Part – 1 Special Feature: Football’s quotes of the week
The past week in club football has been spicy to say the least, smashed up bones, international call ups for grandpas and of course, lead up the international football week. Some people have decided to put the stories into their
own words. The first one in line is none other than Van Bommel. The newly crowned Dutch captain was complimentary of Nigel De Jong after the Manchester City quite famously broke Ben Arfa’s leg and ankle.
De Jong’s display of chivalry was complimented on by the Bayern Munich captain as he said that, De Jong’s history of breaking two legs in six months is rather unfortunate because Nigel De Jong is a very sweet guy indeed. Van Bommel’s
oxymoron of a statement is already a contender for the quote of the season, especially after De Jong has been branded by football media all over the world as nothing short of a barbarian.
On the other hand, there have been some people who have made it clear that they have not go love lost when it comes to De Jong’s tackle for City against Newcastle at the last weekend’s round of English Premier League’s fixtures.
Dutch television’s football expert, Hugo Borst called De Jong a criminal who should be dragged out of football. Such views have been mirrored by Sparta Rotterdam’s Jan Everse who offered his own views as he said that Nigel needs to see a mental doctor. Who
needs to see which type of doctor is clearly under question, as Ben Arfa will be spending some lengthy time with an orthodontist.
Unfortunately enough for Nigel De Jong, Bert Van Marwijk, Holland’s head coach also concurs with the recklessness of the tackle but in sugar coated words. Marwijk, who led Netherlands to the final of the 2010 World Cup tried to
appropriate some of the blame on the English referee, Martin Atkinson as he said that, the tackle was unnecessary and wild but the strange thing is that the referee just stood there. He also took a swipe at English football as he said that apparently standards
for giving a red card are different in England than in other countries.
Samir Nasri is busy enjoying the lighter side of football after his team lost to Chelsea by two goals to nil at the Stamford Bridge on the weekend. The Frenchmen said that with the exception of one player that is Joey Barton; other
players are not “evil” at all. David Sullivan, the West Ham United chairman has been on an agenda on his own. While the rest of the world has been focused on De Jong’s heroic moment at the East Lands stadium, Sullivan has been preparing for a civil war in
London.
West Ham’s owner is quote to have said that, if Tottenham move into the Olympic Park Stadium after the 2012 Olympic Games in England, there will be riots in east London. He said that Tottenham’s proposed move to the Olympic Park
Stadium will be a slap on the face to east London. Sullivan was practicing no caution as he further added that, there is a lot of ill feeling between the fans of Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United. He went onto say that “he was flabbergasted” by the sheer
outrageousness of the suggestion itself.
Craig Bellamy is in a mood of his own these days. A few days after revealing that Manchester United made a move for him in the summer transfer window while he was at Manchester City, the Welsh forward has now come out and taken
realism to new heights.
Bellamy said that, there is no loyalty in football because how can a footballer go from having a really good season with the club and then find himself playing with the kids in the reserve academy at the very same club the following
season. Maybe Craig is providing a eulogy on his experiences at Manchester City, something that will remain a mystery till the end of time itself.
