Part 2: Player Profile – Frank Lampard
Lampard was definitely disappointed as Chelsea were not able to qualify for the next round in the Champions League. Chelsea suffered a huge blow in the round of 16 as Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan were able to defeat them. However, this was not enough to bring the “dynamic” English midfielder down and he started to concentrate on domestic glory. Soon, in March, Lampard played the best game of his season.
Manchester United and Arsenal were the two teams who were trying to grab Chelsea’s legs on the points table and the pressure was all on Chelsea as they had to face a “tricky” opponent, Aston Villa. Aston Villa were performing well throughout the season and it was all “do or die” for Chelsea as they had to win the match if they wanted to win the League. Aston Villa were also trying to grab a win because they were trying to make it to the Champions League spot.
What happened that day was simply outrageous. No one thought that Chelsea were going to literally “outplay” Aston Villa as Lampard took a major leap forward by scoring 4 goals in the same game. Chelsea managed to win the match 7-1 against Aston Villa and they could just see the title coming. With Lampard in great form, Chelsea had to face Manchester United at the “theatre of dreams,” Old Trafford. With the help of Lampard and company, Chelsea won the match 2-1 and helped themselves to gain control of the title race.
During the FA Cup semi final match, Lampard managed to score a goal as Chelsea won the match 3-0. Then, Lampard managed to score another Brace against Stoke as Chelsea were again able to destroy a team by defeating them 7-0.
Chelsea then had to face Liverpool at Anfield and they managed to score twice to take a decisive win over them. The match ended 2-0 for Chelsea and it was the amazing Blues’ midfielder again who managed to get his name on the scoreboard. The match took place in the second last week and during the last match it was Chelsea who had to go against Wigan at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea again managed to destroy another team by winning 8-0 and Lampard scored again for his club. With such a good goal scoring record for the English club, Chelsea managed to score a record number of goals, which was above 100.
After the “glorious” triumph in the English Premier League now it was time for Lampard to face Portsmouth in the FA Cup final. Even though the match was a closely fought encounter, Chelsea won the match 1-0 at Wembley as Lampard was able to get his hands on the third FA Cup medal. With this medal on the Blues’ necks, they managed to win the first “double” for the club.
Even with so much potential, Lampard’s season still ended in a disappointment. The English midfielder had to go to South Africa for his country and could not really perform well as the rest of the team did not “give its best” as well.
Lampard played for the Three Lions in all the of the group matches in South Africa. The matches were against United States, Algeria and Slovenia and it was their side who did not really impress anyone throughout the World Cup and totally struggled to gain momentum on the African soil.
However, the English captain Steven Gerrard and Lampard were the two better performers of the English squad as they went on to face Germany and lost the match 4-1. It was Lampard who’s goal was denied by the side line referee even though the ball had crossed the line by yards. With a disappointed end to the FIFA World Cup 2010, Lampard came back to start training with his English club, Chelsea.
It was definitely Lampard’s last chance to win a FIFA World Cup in his career and he just totally gave it away; however, he has now been called to play for the English side for Euro 2012’s qualifiers.
