Part 2 - Special Feature: Russia’s venues for the FIFA 2018 World Cup
Russia’s second proposed venue is the Dynamo stadium in Moscow; a stadium which is yet to be built. It is believed that once completed, the Dynamo stadium will be one of the highlights of the 2018 World Cup.
Upon construction the stadium will have a total capacity of 44,920 spectators. The Russian football federation has emphasised that the stadium will be built upon the design of an older stadium, which goes by the same name. However,
the older version of the stadium was constructed back in 1920s.
The third stadium which has been proposed as a possible venue for World Cup matches is the Moscow Region stadium. This stadium is also another venue which will be constructed from scratch, and will be able to accommodate up to
44,257 spectators on completion.
The stadium will be built in a rural landscape, and will allow fans to take in the view of the Russian countryside, while basking in the summer sun in Russia. There are however concerns over accessibility issues for fans travelling
to the stadium, but Russia’s 2018 bid’s organisers have confirmed that proper infrastructure and transport facilities will be provided to the visitors to the Moscow Region stadium.
Another new stadium will be build at the outskirts of Moscow, approximately 25 kilometres from the Russian capital’s city center. However it has been confirmed already that the stadium will become the new home of one of Russia's
most famous football clubs, Spartak Moscow. The stadium will have a capacity of 46,990 viewers after it has been constructed.
One of the most recognisable names in world history when it comes to historical cities, Saint Petersburg, will also have a new stadium as per Russia’s proposal. The purpose-built venue, which is already under construction will
have a total capacity of 62,000. It will be built in Saint Petersburg; a city which is very popular amongst historical fanatics and tourists alike. Saint Petersburg is situated in the North West region of Russia, and has a total population of around 4.5 million
people.
Saint Petersburg is also home to one of the wealthiest football clubs in the country, Zenith Saint Petersburg football club. The name of the stadium has however not been decided yet. Construction at the venue has been brought to
a halt recently, as there has been a shortage of funds and logistics. Nonetheless, the idea behind the stadium’s construction is to make the venue seem like a spaceship from above.
One of the other venues that has been proposed by Russia for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, is the Kaliningrad stadium. People might remember the name Kaliningrad from World War II, but Russia’s ambitious bid includes a plan to construct
a 'star like' stadium in the port city. Kaliningrad is located at the edge of the Baltic Sea, close to Russia’s border with Poland and Lithuania. The stadium complex will be built on an island in the sea, and it will be surrounded by Pregolya River. Once completed,
the stadium will host up to 45,000 people at a time.
