Part-2 Special Feature: Wayne Rooney set to part ways with Sir Alex Ferguson for better or worse
If one has to go by what has been said so far, Wayne’s declaration of departure from Old Trafford seems more mystifying than anything else. In all honesty, Rooney’s troubles in England have been issues of his own making. He was
the one who cheated on his wife who was back then pregnant with his son.
Not only that, he also has been in a terrible run of form since March of 2010. Many people attribute this form to the ankle injury he suffered while playing for Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League. By the time the 2009-10
season ended, Rooney was fully fit and that is exactly why he travelled to South Africa with the English national team to play in the FIFA World Cup.
The ex-Everton man was hardly helped by the fact that England performed like a below par outfit and the fans booed them till there was no end. Finally, the team were put out of their misery as Germany battered them 4-1 in the round
of sixteen to send the four lions packing back home. From March of 2010 till August 2010, Rooney was under contract negotiations with the club as he and his agent were negotiating with David Gill and co. for a new improved contract.
These negotiations were initiated after Rooney himself said last spring that he wanted to spend the rest of his career at United. In the same interview during which he expressed the above stated desire, Wayne also added that moving
to Manchester United was the best thing that had ever happened to him.
So, how can a man go from being extremely loyal to the club and its support to being so unhappy that he wants to leave the club. Ferguson’s interview to MUTV included the offer that Manchester United were ready to make Rooney the
best paid footballer in England but that wasn’t enough for the man from Merseyside?
Maybe, Wayne Rooney reckons that a move away from England will allow him to bring his personal life back in order as he will be moving away from all the troubles that the English media brings with it. If that is the case, then
maybe he should talk to Jose Mourinho, Michael Owen and David Beckham. For advice on Spanish media, Michael Owen and Beckham will be perfect tutors for Wayne as they have witnessed Spanish media’s brutality first hand and as for Italy, one only needs to talk
to Mourinho as to how he was treated there during his tenure at Inter Milan.
One thing is for sure that there is no better club for an English footballer in England than Manchester United. Even Steve Bruce, the Sunderland manager and the Tottenham manager, Harry Redknapp were admissive of the fact that
Rooney should stay at United but it seems as if the 24 year old striker has completely lost his marbles now. We are all discounting one crucial factor in this whole saga of epic proportions and that factor is money. Maybe, Manchester United were not actually
offering Rooney the right pay package in his new contract and this is why he thought that a move away from Old Trafford was the right choice.
If that is the case, then it is really a sorry one because Wayne has opted to choose riches over paternal care, money over admiration, wealth over respect. He might be naive at the moment for it gets harder for his supporters to
defend his lunatic behaviour due to this immature approach to professional life. Rooney had the potential to make it big before coming to United but it was Sir Alex Ferguson who guided him to stardom at the Theatre of dreams. If that wasn’t enough, Ferguson
shielded him from the cruel English media as well whenever possible but Rooney isn’t willing to pay back these gestures in kind.
