Part 2: The Best Young Players in the Premier League
Theo Walcott: Theo Walcott joined Arsenal in January 2006. In the same year the player was awarded the BBC young Sports Personality of the Year. He was bought into the team for around five million pounds initially but eventually cost the
team around nine million pounds, due to a performance based incentive that was included in the transfer clause.
He made his debut for the team on the first day of the 2006-2007 season. He had an immediate impact as he came on to set a goal up for his team mate, Gilberto Silva.
He also became the youngest Arsenal player to ever appear in the UEFA Champions League. However his record was later beaten by Jack Wilshere. Despite not starting many games Walcott soon became a part of the Arsenal team and became a name that the fans loved
to cheer.
In the same year that Walcott joined Arsenal he was called up by the England international team to participate in the FIFA World Cup 2006. It was a call up that came to everyone’s surprise including the player himself and Arsene Wenger. However after the
conclusion of the World Cup the player was dropped back to the Under-21’s to help toughen him up a bit more.
Walcott came into prominence in the 2009 season following the departure of Thierry Henry from the side. He was now the only player the team had who could inject the much needed pace that the modern game of football required. He soon established himself as
a first team player and didn’t mind playing on either the right wing, the left or as a forward.
The player didn’t have much say last season as he was out for the most part due to injuries that he picked up along the way. However despite this fact Walcott emerged as a serious threat to the opponents that faced Arsenal.
The player came on as a substitute for most of the matches but still managed to be one of the most impactful players on the pitch despite hardly spending any time on the field.
Walcott’s biggest asset is easily his blistering speed, he tends to leave defenders for dead, who find it close to impossible to keep up with him. However it was often believed that if you took away the players speed he really didn’t have much to offer.
This season however that has not been the case, the player has taken to his criticism strongly and seems to have been training himself during the off season. This season Walcott has finally started to emerge as the player that everyone expected him to become.
He has already gotten four goals to his name and has scored his first ever hat trick in an Arsenal jersey.
However being an Arsenal player he has had a price to pay for this success. During an international match against Switzerland, which was taking place for the Euro 2012 qualifiers, the player managed to injure his ankle which has ruled him out for the coming
five weeks. Arsenal fan’s will be hoping that the player can recover in time and return to the same form that he was showing early on in the season because if he manages to do just that, he could turn out to be Arsenal’s break out player this season who could
make or break their season.
