Part 2: Top 10 divers of all time
2) Roberto Rojas
During the FIFA World Cup 1990, the Chile goalkeeper Roberto Rojas could not stand the elimination his side Chile were about to take as they were trailing behind the mighty Brazil. Rojas had a bright idea as he threw himself to the ground and claimed that he
was hit by a firecracker; however, it was the Chilean who took out a blade from inside his glove and sliced himself on the forehead. The game ended there as the South American side, Chile decided to quit and did not play on. In the replays it was evident that
Rojas acted out the whole thing and the shot stopper was banned for life.
1) Jurgen Klinsmann
The best diver of all times, was the German striker and the coach Jurgen Kinsmann. He was so legendary at attempting this move that his celebrations often highlighted how he dives to win penalties and free kicks for his side. Kinsmann, during his career, won
a lot of penalties unfairly; however, the most famous dive came during the FIFA World Cup 1990 when he helped his side win the match against Argentina as he simply dived and got Pedro Monzon sent off.
Special Mentions:
Sergio Busquets:
The Barcelona holding midfielder is simply a sensational diver. He just falls to the ground whenever he has nothing better to do. His most famous dive came during the UEFA Champions League semi final against Inter Milan. It was a clash of the titans as Jose
Mourinho’s Inter Milan were to face the Spanish giants Barcelona. The young Spaniard made a fuss out of the “little” flick that Thiago Motta gave to his neck. Busquets simply fell to the ground holding his face and was looking from between his fingers while
holding his face as the Inter Milan midfielder walked out of the pitch and received a red card. The match was won by the Catalan giants but they still could not qualify for the final as Inter Milan managed to reach the final on goal aggregate.
Arjen Robben:
The Dutch winger has not been involved in sending off incidents or things that really shook the team up but he is a great diver as well. With his amazingly short steps he would run forward and simply dive to the ground to help his team win free kicks. Arjen
Robben is a great player but also a great diver and it was seen during the FIFA World Cup 2010 as well as the UEFA Champions League when; in both cases he helped his teams reach the final stage but lost both the finals.
There have been many divers in history but the names mentioned at the top are the best of the best. They have been diving to help their teams win penalties and free kicks in order to win matches. However, many call it cheating and do not really praise diving
as an art form. Diving is cheating but definitly extraordinary.
One player in the Premier League is starting to become known for diving and he is the newly signed Arsenal striker, Maroune Chamakh.
