Part 2: What do Arsenal need to do to win some silverware this season
Arsenal have always been a team that, perform good but never really go far. Some people would say that they are Holland’s equivalent on the club level. However things might be different for the team and the team’s fan’s this year. Arsenal seem to be stronger than they have been in their past couple of seasons.
Last weekend Arsenal handed out a thrashing to the new boys in the English Premier league, Blackpool. Arsenal went on to destroy the team by six goals to nil. It was the kind of performance that had been missed.
Arsenal were easily not at their best when they played Liverpool, however the team seemed to have turned it up a notch or two against Blackpool. Even Theo Walcott ended the match with a hat trick.
According to most experts this might finally be the season that see’s an end to Arsenal’s barren trophy less run, that has lasted five years now.
For a while now one of the foremost complaints that everyone has had with the Arsenal side, has been that, there were just too many French players on the side. Some even went as far as to say that the side resembled a Ligue 1 team rather than a Premier League outfit. The team was strongly criticized for not possessing English players who could run the game.
However all of that seems to have changed over the last couple of years. Two of the most prominent figures in the Arsenal squad these days are, Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere. Both the players have been developed and brought up under Arsene Wenger at the club and it finally looks like, Arsenal possess a pair of deadly English players amongst their ranks.
This is not only good news for the Arsenal side but also for the English national team, which could benefit from the addition of two young players such as Walcott and Wilshere.
One of the major problems that Arsenal have had recently, was with their defence. The team seemed to concede far too many goals than they would have liked to. Players like Johan Djourou were consistent own goal scorers for the team and this made all the players grow frustrated and sucked a little something out of them.
However Arsene Wenger has brought in some positive reinforcements to help strengthen the side. Firstly last season he brought in Thomas Vermaelen, who has easily been the best defender that the side has seen for years now.
The manager then went on to offload most of the teams, older defenders who looked like they were taking away more from the team than they were giving to it.
This season so far the manager has brought in, Laurent Koscienly. The player is relatively unknown on the football scale, but however if he performs at the same level that Vermaelen did then it wouldn’t be long before the player becomes a house hold name.
Wenger however still knew that he would need to sign at least one more player, in case one of his two starting centre backs got injured or were suspended for a game. The manager then went on to sign Sebastian Squillaci from Sevilla.
What Arsene Wenger has done, is that he has invested in players who are relatively unknown but still posses all the raw talent that is needed to make them world class players. Also the other major reason for signing such players is the fact that they would have the drive and motivation to perform better and win it all. Since neither one of them have had any major successes previously they would be looking to go all out when they put on the Arsenal jersey.
