Part 2: Who’s going to be in the new England squad
After the calamity that was the FIFA World Cup 2010 for England, Fabio Capello vowed to re vamp the team for the coming years. He began his long road to restoring the nations pride immediately after the conclusion of the tournament.
He admitted to the fact that England lacked creativity pace and an urgency to win. Player’s like Emile Heskey and Jamie Carragher announced their retirement from the international squad immediately after the conclusion of the World Cup. Whereas players like Paul Robinson and Wes Brown only recently admitted to retiring from the English squad. Capello has an uphill battle on his hands if he hopes to revamp the squad in a way so that they are to live up to the expectations of the country. Here is a look at every position and what player would be most suitable for it.
England’s centre backs have always been of major concern to all the managers who have managed the team over the years. Lately in the World Cup Capello tried out Terry, Upson, Carragher and King. Neither one of the combinations that were tried out managed to do any solid defending at the back.
The new options that Capello has on his hands are to either try out newer younger players or try out different combinations till they get it right.
Players that could make the move to start playing for the English national side are, Michael Dawson, Gary Cahil and Ryan Shawcross. All three of those players have time and time again proved on a domestic level that they are more than half decent and could do great things if given the chance. It is now up to Capello to decide if the players are worthy enough of making the move or not.
At left back England have very scarce options. Ashley Cole would be the most likely player to make the cut as long as he wishes to continue playing for the national team. The other options that Capello has are amongst, Stephen Warnock, Leighton Baines and Kieran Gibbs.
Out of those three the only player who seems to be capable enough of replacing Ashley Cole as the future left back of the squad is Gibbs. He has been constantly playing for Arsenal when Clichy has been absent and has done tremendously. He doesn’t make the team or players feel like a second choice defender is playing.
He would make the ideal player to replace Ashley Cole in the future, however it would be absurd to not be playing Ashley Cole as the first choice left back right now. He is currently one of the best defenders out there. He was a tremendous force at Arsenal and has only managed to grow even more ever since he moved to Chelsea.
He doesn’t seem to be slowing down as he is growing older, if anything as he has grown older he has managed to gain experience and a new sense of composure.
Capello would be more than pleased with all the options that he has on his hand. This is due to the fact that in the short run he has, Ashley Cole who easily has another three or four years left in him. Whereas on the long run he has Gibbs who could prove to be a great addition to the squad and long term prospect for the English national team.
