Part 2: World Cup flops with points to prove this season
The new season is on the verge of starting and a lot of players will be looking to start on a clean slate after their previous dissapointing performances. These player’s will be looking to get a shot at redeeming their super star status once again. Here is the countinuation of the list from part one of this article, with a few more players who will be looking to go all out this season.
One of the biggest names to participate in the FIFA World Cup 2010, was that of Lionel Messi. Messi went into the tournament as the current holder of the FIFA World Player of the year trophy. He has also won a treble with his club team, Barcelona. He was scoring goals for fun all season long and creating just as many goals opportunities for his team mates.
Messi went into the World Cup as Argentina’s talisman and their coach, Diego Maradonna’s favourite. Messi managed to initially win the crowds over by creating some spectacular moves and by taking some decent shots on target. As the tournament progressed, he continued to do the same, but his efforts weren’t very successful. When the tournament concluded Messi had no goals to his name. The fact that Argentina’s star player failed to register any goals, proves just why the team didn’t go far.
Messi was also found to be largely missing in Argentina’s match against Germany as well, which saw the Argentines get eliminated at the hands of the Germans and end their World Cup hopes and dream.
Messi will be going into the new season looking to remind everyone just why he was the winner of so many awards. Messi has already scored over a hundred goals for Barcelona and is still one of the youngest players at the team. Messi will be looking to create havoc this season because of the fact that he feels that his title of being the best player in the world is in jeopardy.
The player who Messi overthrew to win the title of being the best player in the world is, Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo just like Messi was supposed to be the driving force behind his national team of Portugal. Ronaldo went into the World Cup having scored over thirty goals with Real Madrid.
He was easily the best player on the Madrid squad. This was because of the fact that he scored all those goals even though he missed parts of the season due to injuries. He was also the captain for his Portuguese side and was expected to lead the team from the front. That was not the case, Ronaldo was found missing for most parts of the Portuguese World Cup campaign and most people even questioned him being selected as the captain of the team.
Ronaldo will now be playing at Real Madrid under Jose Mourinho. Not only will he be looking to impress his new coach but he will also be looking to redeem himself. Ronaldo has not had a bad season for what seems like ages now and he doesn’t plan on ruining that record anytime soon. Ronaldo will be in full force running riot down the flanks at the Bernabeu. According to experts Ronaldo could and would be the decisive factor to Real Madrid being successful this coming term, in both the domestic league and in all European competitions that they participate in.
