Part 3 - English Premier League: Figures and Statistics
Blackburn Rovers took on Stoke at the Britannia Stadium in England for their seventh English Premier League match of the 2010-2011 season. It sure wasn’t a memorable match by any means as the scrappy encounter between the two English
club sides ended up as a win for Stoke by a goal to nil score line. Blackburn have been stagnant and unimpressive this season.
Despite boasting some good players in their lineup, Sam Allardyce’s team has failed to perform at a consistent level. The manager did his team’s morale no favors as he announced a couple of weeks ago that he was more suited to
a team like Real Madrid or Chelsea. Such insult in cheek has resulted in a bad run of form for Blackburn.
Against Stoke, Rovers failed to even force their opposition’s goalkeeper, Thomas Sorensen into a single save. The match that took place on Saturday was an especially forgetful one for Mame Biram Diouf. Mame is on loan to Blackburn
from Manchester United. The ex-Molde striker has been sent on loan by Sir Alex Ferguson to Blackburn Rovers so that he can get more first team time and in doing so he can gain more experience in the English Premier League.
So far, Diouf has performed at an above average level for Rovers, his best game for them came against Arsenal in a match that Blackburn eventually lost by two goals to one. Against Stoke, Diouf was completely off his game as he
attempted a total number of thirteen passes out which only eight found their intended target. More disappointingly the Senegalese striker failed to get even a single shot on target. Something that would have let down his employers, Manchester United, as well
as his temporary owners, Blackburn Rovers.
There was one bright spot for Blackburn against Stoke. This bright spot has been illuminated for the Rovers ever since the start of the currently on-going league season. Michel Salgado, the ex-Real Madrid right back who now plays
for Blackburn is currently the most prolific tackler in the English league. He has successfully won more tackles than any other player in the whole of the English Premier League. On the other hand, Blackpool have been terrific so far in the English Premier
League season.
When the Seasiders gained promotion to the big boys’ league of English club football, no one actually gave them a chance to impress. Ever since they whipped Wigan by scoring an emphatic four goal victory over the Latics, Ian Holloway’s
men have been in the spot light and after their two goals to one win over Liverpool at Anfield. Blackpool are the in form team in the English Premier League. Blackpool are currently 9th in the Premier League table above teams such as Liverpool,
West Ham and Everton. Something that is as astonishing as their progression as a club itself, Blackpool’s main player this season has been their captain Charlie Adam.
The veteran midfielder has been on form this season and scored against Liverpool at the Anfield stadium. He has taken more shots on target in the present English league campaign than Liverpool’s talismanic captain, Steven Gerrard.
Another crucial figure for Blackpool has been their goalkeeper Matt Gilks. Matt has been on fire as he has made thirty five saves in the Premier League this season, a number that surpasses the amount of saves any other goalkeeper has made in the 2010-2011
English Premier League season.
Luke Varney is another player that has been on form for the Tangerines; Luke has netted two goals and managed three assists in his last five games for Blackpool in the Premier League so far. Blackpool have won three, lost three
and drawn one of its seven total games in the English League season thus far.
