Part 3 – Special Feature: Quotes of the week
Going towards some mellow quotes David Gill was on show as well after Wayne Rooney effectively signed a new five year contract at Manchester United. Gill described Rooney’s decision to sign an improved deal as, “A great achievement for
everyone related to the club and we're looking forward to the future now". To spice things up, Wayne Rooney has not scored a single goal from open play for the Red Devils since March of 2010. Gill went onwards and commented on Manchester United’s neighbour’s
Manchester City as he stated that “Clubs have other models - that's their prerogative. Each to their own”.
David James also features in this section yet again as he described his recent move to Bristol City in his own words by adding a bit of drama in it. The ex-Liverpool goalkeeper said, "I thought I would stay with Portsmouth, move to a Premier
League club or go to Scotland. In between thinking about all that, there was my wedding to Amanda to organize. Somehow it all converged at a single point, the morning after my stag do. I received a phone call from an unknown number. I don't usually answer
those, but I was still drunk and so I picked it up. Much to my astonishment the man on the other end was Steve Coppell".
Last season Real Madrid lost in their king’s cup tie against a lower division Spanish league side, Alcorcon. In doing so, they covered themselves in shame, something that Jose Mourinho was looking to avoid before his team’s match up against
Real Murcia in the 2010-2011 Kings Cup. Jose said before the match, "If last year's situation repeats itself, I will cross those who play off my list because they will be dead to me". Unfortunately, something will have to be crossed off that list now as Madrid
drew their first leg of their King’s Cup tie against Real Murcia.
In a week that has been focused upon Wayne Rooney’s potential move away from Manchester United and then his decision to finally stay with the club, Michel Platini did his best to get his break in the news papers as he said, "People are
going to make mistakes and to be a referee I think you have to be a m*******t".
Cesc Fabregas also made the headlines but this time not because of anything related to Barcelona but because of his team’s emphatic three goal win over Manchester City at the past weekend in the English Premier League. At first Fabregas
was humble in victory as he said, "After every win it is easy to say 'oh, you're more mature' and this and that. But is just one more game. That's it. The time to talk about whether we are better and more mature than before is at the end of the season".
Later on; "Even if they were 15 and we were 11 we would still go and win". All is well that ends well for the Spanish midfielder who has been shortlisted for the Ballon d’Or award alongside Xabi Alonso and Xavi Hernandez of Real Madrid
and Barcelona respectively.
Carlo Ancelloti kept himself out of the whole Wayne Rooney scenario but he was a bit more expressive about his smoking habits as he stated, "I started smoking when I was playing. I was 25, and at the time injured. I'd never smoked in my
life but I tried a cigarette one day and I've been a smoker ever since. I do like it, to relax. After dinner. When I'm watching a movie. I know, when you see players smoking today, that it is not a good image.
“But until three years ago in Italy you could smoke on the bench. I used to like that, although I remember one time, when we were playing Ajax in the Champions League quarter-final in 2003. We scored in the last minute and Gennaro Gattuso
jumps off the bench and grabs me from behind. I almost swallowed the thing".
