Part 3 - Special Feature: Russia’s venues for the FIFA 2018 World Cup
Another of the Russian venues for the 2018 World Cup is the city of Kazan, the home of ex-Russian champions, Rubin Kazan. Kazan is somewhat of an educational centre of Russia, as many of the Siberian nations prestigious universities
are based in Kazan. The new stadium will be situated at the edge of the Volga River, and will have a total capacity of 45,000 spectators. The name of the stadium is still undecided.
Another beautiful stadium which is a part of Russia’s venue list is the Nizhny Novgorod stadium. With a total capacity of 44,899, the stadium will be built from scratch, and will be constructed besides a river like many of the
other stadiums for the tournament. The city of Nizhny Novgorod, which will play host to the venue, is one of the most spectacular cities in Russia when it comes to culture. Already on the UNESCO list of 100 cities of history and culture, the city itself will
provide ample opportunity for the fans to have the time of their lives.
The city of Yaroslavl will also be one of the hosts cities. A 44,000 seater stadium will be built in the city, which has its old town site in the books of UNESCO world heritage accounts. The stadium, which is yet to be named will
be constructed in the centre of the city, which is famous for its urban and industrial base.
A completely new 44,918-seater stadium will also be built in the city of Samara. The proposed stadium has already been termed as a potentially iconic venue by the organisers, and it is set to be one of the most visited stadiums
in 2018.
The city of Volgograd will also be getting a new stadium, and if the city is anything to go by, the stadium will be a revolutionary one. Volgograd was previously known as Stalingrad, and is home to Russia’s industrial base, as
a lot of metal and oil interests surround the city. Not only that, the ground will be build in the city centre near the Mamayev Mound Memorial for the World War II casualties.
The small city of Saransk, which has a total population of 300,000, is another city which will host World Cup games. Saransk is the capital of the Republic of Mordovia in the Volga River’s basin, and the stadium which is already
under construction will be completed by 2012. The stadium will have a total capacity of 45,000 spectators. Krasnodar stadium is another stadium put forth by Russia as a host for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The stadium will be around 14 kilometres away from the
city of Krasnodar, which is one of the closest cities to the Caucasus Mountains. The idea behind the stadium is that of an urban recreational park.
Sochi and Yekaterinburg are the last two proposed venues for the FIFA 2018 World Cup. The city of Sochi is a tourist resort near the Black sea, and it has played host to some of the most amazing winter Olympics ever seen in the
world. The upcoming 2014 Winter Olympics will also be hosted by the city of Sochi. The stadium, which is yet to be constructed, will have a capacity around 48,000 spectators, and it will be just 150 meters away from the sea.
On the other hand, Yekaterinburg is a city which is surrounded by the Ural Mountains in Russia. It is the host country’s fifth largest city, and one of the oldest as well; its history dates back to the 1723. The stadium in question
in Yekaterinburg will be an upgraded version of the Uralmash stadium, and it will be an image of the city’s Asian heritage.
