Part 3: The Top Ten Highest Paid Managers In The English Premier League

Roberto Mancini comes in at fourth place with a £4.5m contract until 2013. The Italian started his managerial career at Fiorentina when he was only 35 years old and led the team to their first Coppa Italia in many years. His next stop was at Lazio, where despite financial constraints he won the Coppa Italia again and secured a UEFA Cup semi final and a place in next season’s Champions League.
After that he moved to Inter Milan and it was during that time that Inter became a dominant side in the Italian league, he managed a hat trick of Seri A titles and maintained a 17 consecutive league game victories in Europe and four consecutive Coppa Italia finals. Some say that he was Internazinale’s most successful manager, but his successor Jose Mourinho managed in one year what took Mancini four years.
In the end however, it was his failure in Europe that cost him his job Inter, he then travelled to England to take over Manchester City. He joined mid season and was thought to be a temporary replacement for Mark Hughes, but he signed a three year deal. His arrival had an immediate effect on City’s performance. Among other important wins, they did a double over Chelsea, their first since 1957. City finished 5th that season, their highest in a long time and chairman, Khaldoon Al Mubarak, praised Mancini in an interview and felt he would be manager at Manchester City “for many years to come”.
Many fans would disagree with Fabio Capello’s £6m per year contract with the England national team, especially after the disastrous World Cup campaign. Capello took over the England job in 2008; previously he coached in Italy and Spain and holds the distinction of winning domestically with every club he has coached. He started off with AC Milan where he won four Seri A titles; he also won the UEFA Champions League with them, beating Barcelona in the final.
His next job was at Real Madrid, where he won the La Liga in his first season with them. In Roma he repeated his success, leading the club to their first league title in 18 years. He also led Juventus to two titles in his time there, which were unfortunately stripped after the Calciopoli scandal. We won a total of nine major league championship titles in in 16 seasons with all the teams. His World Cup qualifying campaign with England was highly successful as they won 9 out of 10 games, however the World Cup itself was an entirely different story.
They drew their opening game 1-1 with the United States, for which he blamed the “impossible to control” Adidas Jabulani ball. England made it to the round of 16 of the World Cup, but lost out 4-1 to Germany in the first knockout match. Despite the disappointing World Cup, Capello’s contract was extended in hopes that the Italian manager could duplicate his previous success’ with the England national team.
