Part 4 - English Premier League: Figures and Statistics
Bolton Wanderer’s played against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns Stadium over the last weekend of the English Premier League. Bolton’s two all draw against Manchester United has been Owen Coyle’s teams most prominent result
of the season so far. Bolton are famous for their long ball style of football which is centered around a single muscular striker upfront who tries to head the ball and retain possession through long balls that are launched from his team’s midfield or sometimes
even the defense.
Under their previous manager, Sam Allardyce, Bolton perfected this style and finished as far as the UEFA Cup spot. With Owen Coyle at the helm now, Bolton have tried to combine the long ball style of football along with possession
football that Owen Coyle likes to employ. At this previous club, Burnley, Owen Coyle did a fantastic job as he took them to Premier League promotion in the 2009-2010 season. Midway through the 2009-2010 season, Coyle parted ways with Burnley to join Bolton
Wanderers. It has been a steady ride since then for Owen, who is aiming to finish in the top half of the table with Bolton come the end of the current Premier League season.
Bolton’s one all draw against West Brom was their fifth draw of the season. It has been a mixed season for Bolton so far as they have drawn five, won one and lost one of their total seven matches in the English Premier League.
An interesting fact about Bolton in the 2010-2011 season so far has been that they have attempted a total number of sixty six shots this season. Out of these sixty six shots, only thirty three have been on target for the Wanderers. This conversion rate of
exactly, fifty percent is only third to what Chelsea and Newcastle have managed. Bolton’s main cause of success this season has been their shot accuracy rate, something that Coyle will emphasize upon to his players as the season progresses onwards.
Davies has been a central figure for Bolton thus far in the Premier League season. The striker who is also Bolton’s club captain has been recently called up for the English national team’s qualification squad. He will most probably
feature for the three lions in their EURO 2012 qualification match against Montenegro. Kevin Davies is known to be a traditional English center forward, for Bolton he has been a pivotal figure but he has also conceded a massive number of 28 fouls in the seven
games he has played this season.
Next biggest offender in the league is Andy Carroll of Newcastle United with 20 fouls. Bolton have been drawing six of their seven English Premier League games at the half time interval as far as the 2010-2011 English league season
goes. Premier League giants, Chelsea are the next team in focus. Chelsea defeated Arsenal in their weekends encounter against Arsene Wenger’s team. Chelsea have been absolutely ruthless this season. They have only lost a single match against Manchester City;
Carlo Ancelloti’s men have won six out of their total seven matches thus far. Against Arsenal, Chelsea’s target man Didier Drogba has a very good record of scoring crucial goals. In his last thirteen appearances for Chelsea against Arsenal, Drogba has netted
thirteen goals. That is one goal for every appearance.
Chelsea’s title charge last season was characterized by their efficiency and wins against the other members of the old “Big Four” group, which includes Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United. One can realize Chelsea’s form against
these teams by taking into account the fact that Chelsea have won their last eight matches against these above mentioned teams. Apart from Drogba, Florent Malouda has been on form for Chelsea as well. The French winger has created nineteen chances for his
team mates thus far in the 2010-2011 season but ironically he has not assists to his name thus far in the English league.
