Part 4: English Premier League players looking to bounce back
When the last season of the English Premier League is looked upon, people remember names such as, Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard, Cesc Fabregas, Thomas Vermaelen and Wayne Rooney. On the other hand though, there are players who had a very disappointing season, especially if compared to the giants mentioned above.
The reasons for their poor seasons range from poor form to suffering from injuries along the way. They would thus be looking to bounce back from the disappointment of last season and would want to start over. Here is a look at players in addition to the ones mentioned in part 3 of this article who could potentially be looking to, and most probably would, bounce back this season.
Dimitar Barbatov was signed in 2008 by Alex Ferguson. He cost Manchester Unites around twenty three million pounds and became one of the most expensive signings in the clubs history.
Berbatov came to United as one of the most inform strikers in the Premier League having scored, forty five goals in two season for Tottenham. Berbatov is gifted with sublime technique and some silky footwork. He also has the ability to produce sheer magic out of nothing. However despite being so gifted he has become highly unpopular amongst the Manchester United fans.
Berbatov has managed to hit the back of the net twenty six times and has created nineteen assists for Manchester United over the course of the two seasons that he has spent at Old Trafford. He has however been found sitting on the bench for more than a few games.
He is also currently the all time leading goal scorer for Bulgaria but his efforts couldn’t see the team make it through and qualify for the World Cup.
His time of in the summers would mean that he would be fresh and rearing to go this term. Berbatov has been criticized for being one of the laziest players out there. In the pre season’s however he has managed to show that he can play in quite the opposite fashion and his emphatic goal against Chelsea in the Community Shield is clear indication that the striker means business this time around.
His performances leading up to the season have been greatly encouraged by his United team mates. Nemanja Vidic was reported to have said after the community shield match, "It was important for Dimitar to score; he's been under a lot of pressure but I think he'll score more this season."
If Berbatov can live up to his expectations then he might give Rooney a run for his money, to determine who would be the team’s leading goal scorer this season.
Robbie Keane was sent on loan to Celtic last season. Most believed that, that move would mark the end of his playing days at Tottenham.
However to everyone’s disbelief Keane made a comeback to Tottenham and in now more than eager to crack the starting line up to the team that he once captained. According to Keane, "That spell on loan to Celtic got me back into the swing of things, it got my hunger back to football, which I have now, so that will stand me in good stead for the new season."
If Keane manages to tap into the same form that he once possessed then he would be a goal scoring machine. He would also be looking to be at his best considering this is the first time in Tottenham’s history that they qualified for the Champions League. Keane will be looking to impress and create a new goal scoring record in Europe.
