Part 4: World Cup flops with points to prove this season
The new season is on the verge of beginning and a lot of players will be looking to start on a clean slate after their previous disappointing performances. These players’s will be looking to get a shot at redeeming their super star status once again. Here is the continuation of the list after the first three pats of this article, with a few more players who will be looking to go all out this season.
A single moment can define a players career, that one moment can either be a moment of sheer brilliance or a second of madness. The later was definitely the case for Robert Green. Green was handed the starting position for the England match against U.S.A. Green performed decently till he decided to hand U.S.A a goal for free. Green fumbled a tame shot from Dempsey and allowed the ball to roll into the back of the net. This goal allowed the United States to go level with England on goals.
That mistake, set the tone for the rest of England’s World Cup campaign. It also eventually led to Green losing his starting position in the England Squad. He has also failed to make Capello’s team following the conclusion of the World Cup. He has turned out to be one of the casualties of the World Cup England squad.
He is currently employed at West Ham who are so overly concerned about the players form, that they have resorted to booing the player during training. They claim that doing so would help prepare him for the season and the reactions that he might draw out of fans initially.
Green has admitted that he wants to get a recall to the England squad and the only way for him to do so, is by performing brilliantly with West Ham this coming season.
Another member of the England squad who has been at the wrong end of the fans attention, is Chelsea’s captain, John Terry. Terry was stripped of his role as England’s captain. This was a result of him heading into the World Cup following some controversies that took place in his personal life.
Capello admitted that he had no real interest in stripping Terry of his captaincy but had no choice due to the fact that the media managed to get overly involved in the incident. Terry went into the World Cup with a point to prove, but managed to fail in having a good impact. He was sloppy and falling all over the place. England had no other real replacements on line for the player which is why he participated in every single one of England’s World Cup matches.
Terry is by no means an average defender. He is in fact one of the best and most consistent players on the planet. Terry has managed to appear in the FIFA fantasy team’s starting eleven for four years in a row. That is a record that proves just how good he really is. Terry has vowed to put aside all other matters once the season starts. He has said that his primary target for the coming season is to do the best that he possibly can and help lead Chelsea to a successful defence of their Premier League crown.
With Carvalho gone Terry will have a lot more work to do at Stamford Bridge but experts believe that Terry possesses the mind set, technique and ability to do just that. Chelsea will also be hoping that their captain can bounce back from the misfortunes of the World Cup and be back to his best.
