Part 5: the biggest transfer moves of the summer – David Silva, Yaya Toure
We saw some dramatic and spectacular transfers take place this transfer window. Some of the best players in the world changed teams and made their way across continents.
Here is a look at some more of the big transfers that took place this summer:
David Silva
David Silva made his professional debut in the 2004-2005 season, with Segunda Division’s SD Eibar, on loan from Valencia. He managed to make 35 appearances for the team. In the following season, he was loaned once again but this time to Celta de Vigo. After two years of being loaned, Silva was considered to be fit enough to appear for Valencia’s squad.
Silva finally started to emerge as a world class winger. As the seasons progressed, so did Silva’s reputation. Silva, along with David Villa, became one of the best players to ever play for Valencia.
Silva also made it to the Spanish side that went on to win the FIFA World Cup 2010. During the course of the tournament, news came about that Valencia were facing some financial problems and were willing to offload some of their players.
The first team to respond to that news was Manchester City. City put forward a more than tempting offer that Valencia ended up accepting. The player finally made his move to the Eastlands after the completion of the World Cup even though the deal was agreed half way through the tournament.
Silva will bring with him a whole new dimension to the squad. The team currently has only one decent winger in the form of Adam Johnson, so the inclusion of another winger would only be beneficial to the team. It would add an extra sense of width and a new playing style for the team to adapt to. It could also help City get the crucial goals up front that they lacked last season.
Yaya Toure
Yaya Toure rose to superstar status at Barcelona. He was part of the team that went on to break records and create history when they went on to win six titles in a single playing year. However the season after that wasn’t as good for Yaya Toure. The player was sidelined for most of the season and Sergio Busquets was preferred to play instead of him.
Toure was initially told that he was being saved for the bigger games, due to his experience and game reading abilities. However that never really happened, Toure was left sitting out on almost all the big matches that Barcelona played in and was allowed game time only when someone was injured or needed to be rested.
This in turn started to infuriate the player, but he was very professional about the situation and didn’t let it affect his time on the pitch.
Once the transfer window opened, the player made it very clear that he wished to leave the team. However, Barcelona weren’t willing to let go of the player with ease, the only team that was willing to match the teams’ evaluation of the player, were Manchester City. The team also made the bid worthwhile for the player by making him the highest paid footballer in the world at the moment.
The inclusion of Yaya Toure in the squad is one of the smartest moves that Roberto Mancini has made. The player can play as either a defensive midfielder or a central midfielder. This could be very helpful for the Manchester City side, since they would have more depth and far more options in their midfield. Toure’s signing could just prove to make or break Manchester City’s season.
