Part 6: The Biggest Moves of The Summer – Thierry Henry
We saw some dramatic and spectacular transfers take place this transfer window. Some of the best players in the world changed teams and made their way across continents.
Here is a look at some more of the big transfers that took place this summer:
Thierry Henry: One of the greatest footballers to ever play the beautiful game of football is Thierry Henry. Thierry Henry is quite possibly one of the most complete and all round footballers to ever play the game. Thierry first shot to fame during the FIFA World Cup in 1998. The player was in stunning form during the World Cup, he even ended as France’s top goal scorer with three goals to his name.
It was this stunning performance that earned the player a move to North London to play for Arsenal. Arsene Wenger brought in Henry who was a relatively unknown player but turned him into a house hold name.
Henry scored some of the most phenomenal and spectacular goals that were ever seen. He also managed to go on to break every goal scoring record set by any Arsenal player in the past. Henry scored an average of thirty goals during his stay at the club. That is a record that hardly any one can compete with.
However in the 2006-2007 Henry didn’t get as much field time as he would have wished to, this was mainly due to the fact that he picked up a serious knock half way through the season that saw him sit out for most of the matches. The forward still went on to score twelve goals that season and get seven assists.
However Henry felt that he was holding the team down, from being as successful as they could and ultimately decided to move to Barcelona.
Henry even though was promised the role of being a centre forward at the team, he was made to play as a left winger. Henry took to his new role and didn’t complain once about it.
He scored nineteen goals in his first season along with eleven assists. In his second season he scored twenty six goals along with twelve assists. However in his third season with the club, Henry was dropped to the bench and was allowed to play only for a few minutes during matches. He still made the most of it and scored four goals and managed to get three assists along the way.
At the end of the season, Henry opted to make a move to the New York Red Bulls. Most doubted the players decision but it was strongly justified. He managed to score in his debut game against Tottenham in a pre season friendly.
Henry’s move to the MLS will also prove to be one of the greatest moves in the leagues history. David Beckham was expected to bring a change to the MLS with his arrival, sure the player did sell a lot of jersey’s but considering the player played as a midfielder and on the right side of the pitch, along with that he was almost always injured.
Whereas Thierry Henry, plays as a centre forward and would appear in the limelight far more than Beckham could ever hope to. Along with that Henry is still in the peak of his physical fitness, he might be in his thirties but he is very resistant to getting injured.
Henry could prove to be the key to the MLS finally getting the recognition that they have been searching for.
