Question:

Part questions for my bianchi milano bike.?

I have a Bianchi Milano, hybrid style bike. It is a beautiful bike, and I love it dearly. I have been riding it everywhere lately. I guess its one reason to thank the high gas prices.... Problem is, its more of a cruiser than a commuter.... I really love my bike and I don't really want a new one, nor can I afford one. so, I would like to re-create this one to be slightly more commuter compatible.

I was thinking about changing the handlebars from the straight style to the road bike style I understand I have to switch my brakes and gears, it has this internal gear shift system that seems to require special gear shifters. The ones now are called Nexus. Any recommendations on a possible gear and brake combo system (or separate) that would work?

I don't want much thinner tiers, this is Oregon... but I was hopping for maybe a tire that has some girth but also allows for speed. any ideas?

In general, what am I getting myself into here? Or other ideas on how it can be improved?

Thanks

  1. The Bianchi Milano is a nice Cafe Bike or European city bike.  The changes you're talking about would cost more than the bike did when new.  Road bars, road shifters, road brakes (the linear pull brakes aren't compatible with road shifters without "Problem Solvers"), front and rear derailleur.  A Specialized Globe (flat bar commuter), or something comparable, would cost less than the change you're asking about.  For a road bike, the Specialized Sequoia or Schwinn Le Tour would also fit the bill, for not too much.  There are numerous entry level road bikes that can accept racks and fenders for less than $800, and now with the new model year coming out a lot of shops are dealing.  In Oregon there are three Performance Cycling  stores.  If you're close to one of those they have some great sales, and would have what you're looking for.  Good Luck!
