Part time worker - holiday entitlement?

I work part time but my working days do not really fall on Bank holidays. My boss gives the minimum holidays (ie. 4 weeks plus bank hols - to make 24 days) but as I am not in work for bank holidays should I get pro rata of 24 days rather than pro rata of 16 days? Or is it my problem I dont work bank holidays?

  1. This is a gray area and it is what you negotiate before you accept the job. Suggest you talk to the boss and maybe you can get an entitlement of half the bank holidays. I expect you get Christmas day and Boxing day anyway and possibly Good Friday at Easter.

  2. i think i understand the question, but i'm not sure.

consider yourself lucky, most people who work part time in the US don't get holiday pay, whether their regular work days are holidays or not.  holiday pay is a benefit that most only get with a full time job, and 24 (even 16) days is nearly unheard of, that's a really good job.  i certainly wouldn't complain if i were you.

  3. Legally a company does not have to pay you for bank holidays or give you them off - check ACAS www.acas.co.uk

  4. it isn`t the law that you have to be paid for bank holidays, it`s entirely up to the employer, you are entitled to 4 weeks 2 days a year.

  5. In my last job I had 2 colleagues who worked part time - 1st did Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and 2nd did Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

The way Personnel worked it out they were each entitled to 12 days holiday and 4 Bank Holidays.  They had to work a different day or once they had used up their Bank Holiday Entitlement it came out of their normal Holiday Entitlement.
