Question:

Part-time youth worker and church issues ?

This is a hypothetical question, however, the premise is not far from the truth.

Issue: A part-time youth pastor was told that if he wanted more income he needed to go out and get a second job for the church was unwilling or unable to provide a fair wage for him.

Scenario: A family member (or friend) of this youth pastor has seen what has been happening and has decided to subsidies his income to a level that is more than this young man's supervisor, who is the pastor of student ministries. This friend owns his own business and has hired this youth pastor to do a few graphic designs a month. The church has responded by cutting his already small annual income stating that the man makes more than enough from his second job. Who knows where the decreased income went to?

Question: What would be the scripture basis for this & would a church actually do this to someone? Essentially would this be fair?

[please note: this scenario is part of a seminary class. Please provide intelligent answers.]

  1. I don't personally think this is right.  If they needed to cut his income because the church needed the money to pay bills, he should have been approached and asked about it first.  He could then make the choice to stay or move on.  Alot of churches are unable to pay their help, some ministers have to volunteer their time and services.  But God is the one that sees and rewards and supplies all our needs, not men.  That is why we are told to look to God to take care of us.

  2. There is no scripture basis for the action of this church.

The part-time youth worker should move on. He is either not needed or not wanted.

  3. its absolutely wrong....Matthew 10:10, 1 Corinthians 9:9,

It violates scripture and exposes Greed ,from such turn away 2 Timothy 3:5

  4. Noone has to be a part of any church or work for a church so if he doesnt like it he can leave.

Mormon bishops and other mormon clergy and positions do fulltime church work and dont get paid a dime and work fulltime secular jobs so I dont really have that much sympathy.

You dont have to be a part of a church if you dont like how it is organized.

  5. to be honest, the youth pastor should submit his resignation with a line that reads something like: "since this congregation is unable to afford the services of a youth minister, it would only be fair to the membership for the senior pastor to assume these responsibilities."

i have been in this position.  i did write a letter like that.  funny how quickly my wage increased.
