Part 1: World Cup flops with points to prove this season
The new season is on the verge of starting and a lot of players will be looking to start on a clean slate after their previous dissapointing performances. These player’s will be looking to get a shot at redeeming their super star status once again. Here is a list of some of those players who will be looking to go all out this season.
For the longest time now Wayne Rooney has been the Golden Boy of English football. He has been the player who many managers had entrusted their faith in. The player who everyone expected would lead England to the later stages of the World Cup. This was due to the fact that Rooney had a rather outstanding season with Manchester United last term. He scored more than forty goals in all competitions and ended up as the runner up to the golden boot in the English Premier League.
A player operating in that form would have been expected to lead his team at the front. However that was not the case. Rooney was nothing more than a big disappointment thorough out the tournament. He failed to register a single goal and the best that he could do was to hit the post on one occasion.
Rooney is well aware of this fact and has vowed to redeem himself. Alex Ferguson who manages Rooney at Manchester United responded to his star striker critics by saying that, you can’t put an entire nations hopes and dreams on the shoulders of one player and then get disappointed if he doesn’t deliver. It’s a team game and not a one man show.
Rooney will be looking to continue his hot streak in the Premier League by netting a some needed goals in the approaching season. According to most experts, Rooney would be one of the leading contestants for the title of the English Premier Leagues golden boot.
On paper, one entire half of Spain’s World Cup winning attack force, was Fernando Torres. The Liverpool striker was expected to pair up with David Villa up front and run havoc at the World Cup. Torres somehow managed to do the complete opposite. While his team mate was running around scoring goal after goal, Torres was left clutching his legs and falling all over the place. Torres appeared to be the joke of the team that lifted the World Cup trophy.
It is believed that Torres played so terribly because Liverpool had a very poor domestic season and because he picked up a couple of injuries along the way as well. Following the World Cup, Torres was contemplating a move away from Anfield.
There were big money offers for the player from clubs such as Chelsea and Manchester City. They were willing to offer these large sums of money despite the fact that the player had not been performing at the potential.
Torres will be looking to bounce back from the disappointment that was the World Cup. He will have a point to prove as well, he will be looking to prove just why he is worth all the money everyone is offering him. He would be looking to remind the word why he has been and always will be ‘El Nino’
