Question:

Partial power outage, circuit breaker not tripped?

This evening, I was putting my daughter to bed and the power in her room went out. I heard a noise that sounded like something fell when it happened. At first, I thought something had fallen and knocked the extension cord loose and out of the socket, but realized the overhead light had gone out, too. Her bedroom window is open and the electric meter outside it just under her window (right where the outlet is where I thought I heard the noise). My husband checked the circuit breaker and flipped them all (a couple of times) and even the main one and cannot get the power back on in her room (it's also affecting a light in the basement). Any thoughts? Thank you so much! My husband is very handy, but he's not an electrician. He just went to bed mad because he has no idea what's wrong or what to do. Please help!

  1. maybe you just need to replace a fuse in your fuse box or burned out the breaker in your breaker  box . That would make it impossible to turn it back on if you have tried flipping the switch and it didn't work. Hopefully not the main one as that can be expensive, best to call an electrician.

  2. call the power co you lost a leg nothing in your house that works on 220 works

  3. Something similar happened to a neighbor.  Tree limb pushed a wire off at the power pole in the back of the yard.  Symptom: no 110v on one leg of breaker panel.  Only half of breakers had power.  My cheap volt-ohm meter located the problem at the circuit breaker panel.  Called power company and they sent a man out and fixed it.

  4. Power outage -

    1. check the breakers,

    2. check the GFCI resets on all of the recepticles around the house.  If the basement has a recepticle on the same circut as the one upstairs, (stranger things have happened) there may be a GFCI on the circuit.  These are the push button recepticles, with a test and reset button.  Check them all, as the one that has tripped can be anywhere on the circuit.  Some circuits have these on the breaker, identified by the push button that says Reset.

    3. Is there a breaker under your meter box, a main breaker.  Some houses have two.  Check both.

Come back to us if this doesn't help.  I have more suggestions, but lets eliminate the common problems first.

  5. Did you check the GFCI outlets in the bathroom and outside and in the kitchen. If that did not fix the problem, you need to call a qualified professional electrician. This could be any of several problems, including a breaker that has failed and will act like it is reset, but the unit is not closing.

  6. Are any of the lights in your house dim? If so, you have a break in your power line that comes to the house. This is common in buried utilities as they use aluminum wire. If there are no GFCI receptacles tripped in the house ( don't forget to check the basement ) this is a real possibility. It happened to my daughters house when it was only 3 years old! Call the power company and have them check it out.
