Party Lad makes a successful turf debut at Gulfstream Park
Jal Dastur’s 2-year-old colt, Party Lad, is making rapid progress in his racing career, and now with a record of three wins of four starts, he is looking ahead of the big time, with the future in turf races for sure.
Michael V. Pino trained Party Lad won for the second consecutive time when he ran his eight rivals off their feet to capture the $54,500 main event on the Gulfstream Park turf on 20 December, 2012, as he went on to defeat Bernie the Jet in second and Holy Command in third with the winning time of 55.81 seconds running over a distance of 5 furlongs.
The 2-year-old colt by Vibank is a Canadian bred, and he started racing on 18 August, 2012, and defeated maidens at first asking over the Woodbine’s synthetic surface, and covered 5 furlong dash in 58.57 seconds.
"We shipped him down to Florida to try him on the grass," trainer Mario Pino said. "He's fast and he's out of a Stormy Atlantic mare, so I figured he'd handle it well. We'll probably look for a two-other-than and keep him on grass for now. Five and five-and-one-half furlongs looks like it's going to be his best game for now."
Out of Stormy Atlantic mare Helen’s Fury, Party Lad was introduced to stakes company after his magnificent maiden win, but it didn’t work out as planned, as he was defeated to finish seventh in Bull Page Stakes, also over Woodbine’s synthetic surface going over a distance of six furlongs in October.
He then bounced back to winning ways in an allowance race at Penn National on 23 November, 2012. These two victories were won by a combined margin of 10 ½ lengths, and his recent turf triumph was the first time he ran on grass.
Trainer Michael Pino will have a pair of two new three-year-olds to run at Woodbine on New Year’s Day. In the Grade 3 Old Hat Stakes, Pino will be represented by She’s All Scat and Tate’s Landing will be pointed towards the Spectacular Bid Stakes.
"She's All Scat is quick, but not quite as quick as Party Lad, although she did win her last race on the lead going seven furlongs," Pino said.
