Pascual Perez found dead at 55 in Dominican Republic – MLB Update
According to a leading sports website, former New York Yankees’ pitcher Pascual Perez, 55, was found dead in Dominican Republic on Friday. Perez made his Major League Baseball debut in 1980. In October 1981, he called it a career, going 67-68 with a decent
3.44 ERA.
The source claims that Perez was killed in a home invasion robbery on November 1, west of the Dominican Capital of Santo Domingo. His ex wife, who went to pay him a visit, found him dead 8:30 a.m. and immediately called the police.
Investigations revealed that whoever had killed Perez was searching for money in the house. A prosecutor involved in the investigations told the reporters that his body was discovered with a severe head wound in the town of Don Gregorio.
Perez played for the Yankees between 1990 and 1991. Throughout his big league career, he was surrounded by controversies. In 1991, he tested positive for drugs and was suspended for the entire season.
“I feel like a heart attack,” Perez said at the time. “I think I get fired, maybe. Boss Torre say he fine me $100. I say, ‘What you say, $100?’ He smile, say, ‘Ciento pesos.’ I smile. Ciento pesos worth only 10 bucks.”
“They can come and test me again any time. Right now,” he said. “Let’s go. ... God, if I’m lying, I should go blind. I’m tired of people looking at me like I killed someone in the street.”
“Uno Mas Tiempo,” he told the reporters to take one more photograph. “It means one more time. I’m not done yet.”
Perez did not make any effort to make a return to baseball. He is best known for getting lost on the highway in the United States while trying to reach the ballpark to start the game for the Atlanta Braves.
Perez circled the city twice before making a stop at the gas station and was told that Braves’ Manager and his team-mates had been waiting for him. Perez made 17 starts in the Bronx, going 3-6 with an impressive 2.87 ERA in one year.
He will definitely be missed by his family, former team-mates and fans.
